GRE STUDY TIPS 2017 HOW TO SCORE IN THE TOP 10 PERCENTILE// HOW I STUDIED// I just took the GRE and I scored a 161 on Verbal, 156 on Quantitative, and a 5 on Analytical Writing! Here's my experience of the test day itself + How I studied using Manhattan Prep and what I wish I would have focused more on! Having just taken the GRE I can say that this video is to the point! It's really worth following Olivia's advice. I studied for roughly two months while working a full-time job and doing various other applications etc. I bought the Kaplan GRE plus book initially, but found it wasn't good enough on the quant section. So I bought four of the six Manhattan Prep books and they are SO MUCH BETTER. I'm a geology major so not well practised in either quantitative or verbal skills. My scores were as follows: Diagnostic: Q153, V163 Second: Q158, V162 Third: Q160, V160 Fourth: Q155, V158 Actual exam: Q159, V164 I took alll my practice exams except the diagnostic one the day before the exam. Hope that helps! 🙂

I did my GRE at July 2018 and got Q:159, V:146 and AW: 3, so I have to re-take it again. I did all the 5lb manhattan Quant chapters but didn't practice Verbal and AWA that much (only learned some vocab- about 200). I need to get at least 153 at the Verbal section and 5 at the AWA. P.S. English is my third language. Any tips for how to enhance my score at the verbal and AWA sections?
Olivia Simone (2 месяца назад)
Do the practice sections on verbal and AWA :/ and learn vocab. the book told me the exact format on how to write an essay so I followed it! Good luck

were you allowed to use a calculator during the test?
ClandestineGirl16X (2 месяца назад)
Olivia Simone thank you!!
Olivia Simone (2 месяца назад)
There's a calculator on the screen! On the ets website it says more about it. I wasn't allowed to bring my own, but they have a basic one you use on the computer
Stephen B. Smith (2 месяца назад)
Sorry to break it to you but a 161 Q and 156 V are not that great for engineering. Those are pretty average scores.
Nor Cal (2 месяца назад)
Soooooo . . . "Stephen" -- I accept your apology and find you to be the bigger man for conceding how wrong your initial comments to Olivia Simone were. :)
Stephen B. Smith (2 месяца назад)
Engineer schools don't care that much about AW as long as you don't get a 1 or 2 you're good. They also don't care too much about verbal. As long as you get 155 or above you're good. They care only about Q which has to be mid to high 160s. So her getting a high verbal scores doesn't mean anything. Her Q score is pretty low for engineer standards.
Nor Cal (2 месяца назад)
Wow -- did you read what you just wrote! You initially started by stating her scores were "Average" for engineers. Now you try to state that her Verbal score of 161 does not exceed the averages of the "TOP engineering schools" in the country, but then you contradict yourself when you state the average for the TOP engineering schools is 155-160. Sooooo she does exceed the average for top engineering schools in the country in Verbal!!! (your stated averages are way off by the way for top schools but I don't need to go there.) You also dismiss her scores in both verbal and writing because engineers "don't care much about" that -- which obviously areas that are your weakness. And . . . . Oh yeah -- you are not Stephen Smith!!
Stephen B. Smith (2 месяца назад)
Exceed top engineering schools? Um no. The average Q scores for top engineering scores are 164-170 and 155-160 for V. They don't care that much about AW but generally its 3.5-5.
Nor Cal (2 месяца назад)
Sorry to break it to you -- you are not Stephen Smith, she did not get a 161 Q, but rather a 161 V and a 5 AW, scores that far exceed the averages for the top engineering schools in the country -- get your facts straight before you troll.

Your video was so motivating! Thanks for sharing! While I used the Kaplan book, I took a lot of your study advice. My first Power Prep exam was V155 Q154. Just got back from the actual test with a raw score of V163 Q158! I studied for about 90 hours over a 6 week period. A week before the test I took three practice exams (2nd Kaplan exam, 2nd Power Prep, and Manhattan free exam) and emphasized mastering my feelings around the exam. I noticed my scores really improved (V158 Q156 the day before the exam). I felt like I really benefited from focusing on dissecting the exam and employing the test-taking strategies I learned in the Kaplan book. Doing this, I felt confident to tackle the GRE and that I could rely on it to work for me.

can't seem to fall below 166 in quants, and above 162 in verbal, verbal seems rather difficult for us indians.
Hoang Tran (3 месяца назад)
howd you figure out that your score was top 10 percentile? I cant find an scales only for cumulative percentiles
Hoang Tran (3 месяца назад)
Another way to look at it is that it just makes logistical sense to have a score be always around the same percentile. Say if you took it one year and got a 160 on each section (about 85th percentile for ea section) and the person who took it a year after you got the same score but suddenly it was assigned 70th percentile. An admissions counselor is not gonna be able to easily compare you guys. That’s also a reason why the mcat was changed from out of 45 to out of 528 after adding a section...to not confuse admissions counselors comparing scores. Also percentiles take into account new scores for an amount of time and your percentiles fluctuate minimally that way (I went from a 97th percentile mcat score to a 96th percentile in the span of a year bc groups of students who took the test after me did well, skewing my score downward marginally).
Hoang Tran (3 месяца назад)
Nor Cal percentiles rarely vary more than a few single digit points. That’s one of the reasons why scaling is reliable. Like how a 500 on an SAT section remains consistently about 50th percentile.
Nor Cal (3 месяца назад)
Percentiles change depending on the year, the version of the test you took, and your peers. Just because a person got a certain percentile with a score does not mean everyone with that score at a later date will be in the same percentile. It varies from year to year.
Hoang Tran (3 месяца назад)
correction 158 Q is only 68th percentile
Hoang Tran (3 месяца назад)
thats so interesting. all the info I found online doesnt ever combine the score. I made a 161 V -88th percentile, and 158 Q - only 70th percentile. Neither of those are above 90th and I don't see percentiles for combined scores nor can find them online.
Edwin Chukwurah (4 месяца назад)
165: verbal 161:Quantitative 4: Analytical Writing Study tips: Take the SAT multiple times when you take it, for whatever reason. Studying for actual GRE optional. Pick the date at random, or place it very close to your birthday. Abuse substances, if available. Leave half of the last section undone. See, it's easy, kids! (not really) Seriously though, standardized tests need to be discontinued, or heavily reformed. The Analytical Writing section had topics so remote and bland, I'm assuming they really just graded on style and accuracy, which are technicalities. The Verbal sections select readings that are also very remote, and very long. Add that to the fact that there is a skill to the tests themselves, outside of verbal and quantitative skill, and you get a test that can only be studied for...with itself.

Most realistic and practical video out there for advice! A lot of other videos brag/guarantee 164+ in verbal or 166+ Quant, where the people advising already had a STRONG vocabulary and algebraic foundation prior to studying, which I find to be unrelatable. I bought a used Manhattan Prep 5 lb book on eBay for $15 after this review and, luckily, found a 2016 Kaplan Premier book for $1 at a Goodwill and that was it! You don't need all of these expensive tools/courses because most, if not, all of the content is out there if you look for it! The books, as well as ETS, provide a guide of content you should be searching/reviewing and the Manhattan book definitely had questions almost identical to the real test (some even more difficult than the actual GRE, so you are ready for anything). All of the potential vocab words are out there so study them on flashcards/study sheets as much as possible, and it's more important to have them used in sentences and with their potential secondary definitions. My top tip to anyone starting prep would be to PRACTICE WITH TIMING. Under stress, this can easily overshadow all of your other preparations and be the sole cause of your demise. Overall, great video, Olivia! Personally, I studied about 5 days a week (1-3 hours a day) for 2 months while also working 60+ hours a week, so it can be done. For reference: I scored 160V/158Q and 4 AW (due to hardly practicing/studying for the AWA)

Thanks, Olivia! I'm 60+ and returning to academia to finish my dream. But after 30+ off campus, I am not the mental master of all arts and sciences that I was. This is *so* specifically informative, I know exactly where to expect the sweet and the sour spots will be. You drew a great map of the GRE landscape.

The Kaplan book has a lot of tips for the reading comprehension because the people who make the GRE are looking for certain things. Also, I've been studying vocabulary a good bit. I write the word and definition and an example sentence. It has helped a ton. The Kaplan book have tons of test tips and what they are looking for on each section. I highly recommend the Kaplan GRE plus book. It also has a ton of stuff online, and it's only $25. Good luck. And I'm praying for you all! ❤

Olivia Simone (7 месяцев назад)
Hi! so I definitely recommend buying Manhattan prep and looking at their website. It's been a year for me, but I'll tell you what I remember! I remember they wanted you to do at least 6 paragraphs (more words = higher scores) and to take a definite stance, yet also approach the topic from the other point of view (in a paragraph or 2) and basically say 'yeah, I see their point here, xyz' But again, it's been a year for me, so I would check out the source directly!
Meng-Hsien Liu (7 месяцев назад)
What an awesome score on the AWA. In your book, what would be the nitty-gritty of getting a high score on the AWA? I need at least a 5 on the AWA! Thanks a lot.

It's been a year, so I recommend getting the book or looking at the Manhattan Prep website. But from what I remember, they wanted you to do at least 6 paragraphs (more words = higher scores) and to take a definite stance, yet also approach the topic from the other point of view (in a paragraph or 2) and basically say 'yeah, I see their point here, xyz' But again, it's been a year for me, so I would check out the source directly haha

It’s alright! I graduate in May, I asked a professor yesterday about it and he thought I was to late but the deadline is in July. I had never even heard of the GRE until yesterday to be honest. I had studied for the BAR for awhile before I realized I wanted to go into more of the Law Enforcement side of criminal justice rather then actually practicing Law. But yea I understand what you mean, I have a few trolls every now and again on my channel. It gets aggravating
Olivia Simone (8 месяцев назад)
No, I'm sorry. I thought you trolling me with your comment, I didn't realize you genuinely were still learning the scoring system! There have been comments lately that have caused me to become hypersensitive, so I apologize if I came across as rude!!! Good luck on GRE! I hope you get the score you need

Alessandra The Great (6 месяцев назад)
Cg Lr i noticed that as well... did you end up buying the smaller books or did you stick to the 5lb book?
Cg Lr (11 месяцев назад)
Olivia Simone Thank you for the response. I’ve been using the big book and it has the practice problems, solutions and explanations at the end of each chapter. Did you see that? Also the list of vocabulary words are there too. Also the essays are there... oh and if you own the book you can access the Flashcards online. I’m just thinking of the people who could save instead of buying the same. I get the same scores on pre-studying diagnostic test as on the real test post studying. I’m retaking just to see if I can do a little better. Good tips. Thanks for sharing.
Olivia Simone (11 месяцев назад)
Cg Lr No! Not at all! The 5lb book is simply practice problems, whereas the set of 8 books tells you the directions of the test, explains the format, TEACHES you HOW to do the problems, along with practice problems and solutions. It also teaches you how to do the essay and vocab words, which the 5lb book does NOT have
