While sociology is a social science, we can use it to explore some intensely personal, private things. Today we’ll explore what sociology can tell us about sex and sexuality. We’ll also see what the three sociological paradigms have to say about sexuality and sexual orientations.

Ok. This is not true. The terms "masculinity" and "femininity" refer to the archetypal behaviors extracted out from the average tendencies of men and women. Women and men have biological predispositions for certain kinds of behaviors.
Is this woman QUALIFIED?....does she have any creedance/clearance/peer acceptance/scientific acknowledgement by her peers or authorities/in other words is she real or just a FRAUD like many others on You Tube who claim to be scientists?...........
Everyone is pointing to 7:27 here but seriously do Y'all see how you didn't respect the cultural differences of the eastern highlands of Papua New Guinea and called it "pedophilia" and used your own social norms and values to explain why it's not acceptable? Well, this is what how other societies see homosexuality and find it abnormal and most Westerns attack them and call them "homophobics" or "transphobic".
Has anyone else thought about the stupidity of the logic of throwing gay people in jail? "We don't approve of your homosexuality, so we will throw you in prison with a bunch of dudes (or gals) because nothing gay ever happens in prison."
I love it. Of course, It is to be expected that she didn't include everything and some things she says i don't completely feel are right, but as a gender fluid teen, I love seeing representation in education. Anyone who disagrees with what she is saying, please email me, because i really want to see what the other side of the argument is like, beyond purely emotional or religious responses. Paint the world rainbow!
As a gay, i learned nothing new. But this is def a good video for me to pop out whenever someone starts the convo. It is a mouthful and she went through it all. Even the tribe, which I did not expect to be mentioned here.
To be honest, I'm looking for a video that will predict the shifting paradigm regarding sexuality. As sexual activity is shifting towards a more fluid scenario. How would that affect then our 'sexual scripts' and identities? I am a lesbian. I know this by trial and error I'm open to interactions with men but recognize I don't react to them.
If the masses shift towards all being fluid and experimental at least. Will the extremes of the spectrum be the only real calls for identity? Would attempts to differentiate between sexual behavior be necessary? We'd just be bonobo's out here, living our best lives, or what are the expectations with the next wave?
If anyone could point me to a video with that content ... :)
I really hate this new distinction between sex and gender because it's unnecessary and ultimately counter-productive. I agree that gender roles are socially constructed and should be eliminated so that all people can be true to themselves and pursue their right to life, liberty, and happiness without social obstructions BUT why is it necessary to play this identity game with terms like transgender and cisgender? If there are no differences between the sexes other than reproductive roles, then why is it necessary to identify as one or the other? Isn't that implying that there IS a difference?
There is, socially a difference. As maybe the rest of the society will treat you badly if you get out of those constructs. Maybe Its not necessary in our society as today, but its still deeply rooted in it.
Could it not be the case that in _some_ cases there really are underlying statistical biological differences between sexes (that correlate with basic gender types, or "heteronormative" ideas, for example)? To say flat out, full stop, that there are no differences, or everything is just socially constructed, seems a bit premature – to say the least. Especially considering how little sociology evidently works with biology.
I would very much prefer if this came from a more objective approach. A lot of the "facts" that are stated here are not facts but rather opinions posited in light of a liberal view. While I very much agree with this point of view, this is not a fact. Perhaps it is worth clarifying this.
Wait a minute, serious quesion?
First you claimed that Gender is socially constructed, irrelevant of biological sex.
But then you claimed that Gender is biologically defined at birth, irrelevant of Sex (ie. Transgender people being born with a different Gender Identity than their biological Sex).
But how can Gender be socially constructed if someone can be born with a Gender Idenitity, which would make Gender a biological trait and not a socially constructed form of expression? Either Gender is biologically defined or Gender is socially constructed. The two contradictory claims cannot both be true.
No, 1 in 1'500 individuals is not a "significant" part of the population. Even 2% of the population is not comparable to the other 49 and 49 percent of binary sexes. Also, Sociology tries to make the case that gender "exists" but it remains a social construct. Gender is a concept that we created for words (which english got rid of) but there is no proof humans have a gender. If I say I don't believe in gender, you can't "prove" I'm wrong.
Half of what you're saying I don't agree with but seriously telling a woman to smile more telling anybody to smile more might be a good thing they could be depressed you might let him know that there's another reason to be happy and to smile more they might be unhappy depressed what's wrong with finding out what's wrong with them or if they're upset or depressed or something is bothering me wouldn't that be a friend saying hey you need to smile more why so gloomy I think I'll be a friend wanting me to be happy
UGH THIS VIDEO DID IT
It defined gender as a social construct.
As if I as a trans woman just transitioned so I could wear dresses and makeup for the fun of it.
Or maybe, you know, it's a biological aspect of one's brain.
GENDER = BRAIN SEX
I transitioned not because of artificial gender roles, but because my brain sex did not match my body sex. Any trans person could tell you that if, you know, you asked them. Which you clearly didn't.
I really really really wanted this to be good, but you're bending to sociological, feminist, social science definitions, not actual, you know, medical definitions of gender.
Wow. Some of the people commenting on here are very ignorant and sexist. I hope it doesn't affect what Crash Course focuses on and upload on their page. This sort of ignorance and prejudice will slowly die out while society moves forward.
I'm not gonna lie, it's still a huge debate in the trans community. Can you be a woman or man with out looking like a woman or man? I'm honestly confused why other trans people are so concerned about their sex when all i really care about is my gender.
My best guess is because how so many people confuse sex and gender. Even in the trans community.
I've watched the other crash course videos and those were informative and based on facts. This is the complete opposite!!! What a joke seems to be based upon pushing some ones opinion rather than educational.
Jeez there are only 2 sexes males and females and you need each of them to reproduce. I mean this is the nicest way possible and understand that some people are just born attracted to the same sex, but it is not normal to be gay it is a mutation in chromosomes the produce different hormones then that sex would normally have. And xxx or xxy people are not their own sex either, they have a mutation which is not normal. To say they are a different sex than the 2 real sexes is to say a person with down syndrome is a different sex(obviously not the same type of chromosomes but I am trying to make a reference). What it comes down to is that the ultimate goal for living things is to reproduce and us humans reproduce by a male and a female having sex. Everyone who might be seen as not male or female is still one or the other but just has a mutation.
Homosexuality and transgenderism are against nature. They mean humanity extinction. They were considered a mental, physical and psychological problem by the unbiased science. Accept the truth whether you like it or no.
That's it in short.
its titled sex & sexuality... but you talk... about gender... for about 1/4 of the video...
idk i think the gender videos were ordered weird i got answers on it in this video that i expected to get in other videos
This is kind of just taken out of gender “studies”, isn’t it? This definition of the word “gender” is a rather resent one (and isn’t the only one). The the more common definition is that of the word “sex”, making “sex” and “gender” synonyms. This is what I don’t like with some people talking about these things. They are deliberately vague and unclear in a most calculated way so as to create an illusion that is designed to make you hold a belief which is more in tune with their own subjective political agenda. 😤
the only issue i have with this video is the act they talked about more about feminism than queer people when the tittle was 'sex & sexuality' it would have been good to bring up trans/ non-binary people in this as we have a lot to do with the topic.
two genders. two. You can be either one, I don't care. Feeling different than social norms is great but it doesnt mean you have to be a "non binary" gender because there's only two to choose from. And genderfluidity is kind of a problem because you're changing your mind fairly often...instead of feeling safe in your body. Why do we have to have so many labels? Just freaking be yourself. Labels take away more individuality.
Ok video I hear you out but you don't really mention biologically related stuff, big example being the fact that inbreeding is really detrimental to a population, genetically, but then again this is sociology course, not biology crash course so I'll give you a pass but don't forget that its there
Every time you say something is socially constructed, you might as well have just said a half finished sentence. Name anything that is not socially constructed. The phrase applies to everything and therefore it is essentially meaningless. So many things wrong with this video. Damn Crash Course, you should have just not bothered with this series at all.
Okay, overall I liked the video. I thought you stuck to facts very well and touched on the "why" of social sexual norms and such, which is deeply important and needs to be understood. But towards the beginning, when you broke off on explaining gender and that whole thing, I felt that it might have been better saved for the video specifically on gender and such, rather than this video.
Finally a topic i can discuss with my friend... Who is also my lover... And fater... He is also my dog. But it's fine. I don't let society tell me what to do. Those people don't know what's good for them. Now come on Sparky, i let you lick the peanut butter.
You probably should have included that there's a very good biological explanation of why the overwhelming majority of people are heterosexual. You know, the whole 'otherwise we wouldn't be here' thing (evolution).
She loves to use the word "significant" to describe statistically insignificant instances, and then illustrates this by cherry picking examples. I don't think that word means what you think it means...
Social construct sure, but is it purely a social construct? No divulging into multiple methods of its construction within society? Seems too simple an explination. Although the title of this channel IS crash course. So these are all snippets of larger pieces of information.
I'm trans and I don't think gender is completely socially constructed. There are feminine presenting trans men and masculine presenting trans women so there is a difference between gender expression (which is socially constructed) and gender itself. Gender, while it is related to expression, is also related to biology/the brain. There are studies that have found that trans people have brains that are more similar to the gender they identify with than to the gender they were assigned at birth meaning there has to be some degree of biology to it.
The western world might have frowned upon people who are bioligically intersexual or homosexual in the past but most of the non western world still considers them freaks as of today. I would go so far as to say that western society is the only major society in which it is legal and accepted ( by most atleast) to be gay or trans. So why is the west always explicitly mentioned as particulary bad sociologist
Thank you!! Thank you so much!!! I'm non-binary, and I'm so happy a reliable channel talked about the topic of gender and sexuality. Ignore the haters in the comments and keep making this good content!!
