Piper Anderson: Can stories create justice?

06:12

How we'll become cyborgs and extend human potential | Hugh Herr

15:14
Humans will soon have new bodies that forever blur the line between the natural and synthetic worlds, says bionics designer Hugh Herr. In an unforgettable talk, he details "NeuroEmbodied Design," a methodology for creating cyborg function that he's developing at the MIT Media Lab, and shows us a future where we've augmented our bodies in a way that will redefine human potential -- and, maybe, turn us into superheroes. "During the twilight years of this century, I believe humans will be unrecognizable in morphology and dynamics from what we are today," Herr says. "Humanity will take flight and soar." Marissa Giustina: Significant loophole-free test of Bell’s theorem with entangled photons

01:16:37
Local realism is the worldview in which physical properties of objects exist independently of measurement and where physical influences cannot travel faster than the speed of light. Bell’s theorem states that this worldview is incompatible with the predictions of quantum mechanics, as is expressed in Bell’s inequalities. Previous experiments convincingly supported the quantum predictions. Yet, every experiment requires assumptions that provide loopholes for a local realist explanation. In this paper, I will discuss the recent results from my laboratory, in which we designed an experiment that closes the most significant of these loopholes simultaneously. Using a well-optimized source of entangled photons, rapid setting generation, and highly efficient superconducting detectors, we observe a violation of a Bell inequality with high statistical significance. The purely statistical probability of our results to occur under local realism is exceedingly unlikely, corresponding to an 11.5 standard deviation effect. Aging: It's Not What You Think | Thad Polk | TEDxUofM

15:42
Our brains are powerful pieces of machinery that give us the capacity to do amazing things. Unfortunately, common wisdom says that age isn’t too kind to our minds’ abilities. Neuroscientist Thad Polk walks through the actual effects of aging on the human brain and shows that our assumptions might not be so accurate. Dr. Thad Polk has been a member of the University of Michigan psychology faculty since 1996. His lab uses functional MRI, computational modeling, and behavioral experimentation to study the neural architecture of cognition, including how it is affected by aging, by experience, and by genetics. He has taught over 6,000 UM students over the past 20 years. In 2006, he was named an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in recognition of outstanding contributions to undergraduate education, and in 2012 Princeton Review included him on its list of the Best 300 Professors in the US. The Real Truth About Genetic Testing, Why 23AndMe Is Not Enough (& The Most Advanced Genetic Test Y

02:04:07
Listen to the full episode here:: http://bengreenfieldfitness.libsyn.com/the-real-truth-about-genetic-testing-why-23andme-is-not-enough-the-most-advanced-genetic-test-you-should-get-instead-for-customizing-your-exercise-your-diet-your-supplements-more Three months ago, I and my twin ten-year-old boys sent our saliva off to a lab in Canada for one of the most advanced genetic tests available. And I was blown away by what I learned. In today's podcast, I reveal the test that we took, exactly what we learned and how you can take the same test as we did. My guest is Dr. Karim Dhanani, who is the founder and Chief Medical Director at Toronto’s Centre for Biological Medicine, a clinic that is redefining North American naturopathic medicine for the 21st century. Dr. Dhanani’s clinic – a specially designed, ecologically sound facility set in pristine Canadian woodland – has become a global mecca for those seeking to live their lives at 100%. For Dr. Dhanani, the appeal of medicine was always the investigative aspect. He loves breaking down a tough problem, and systematically uncovering the root causes with diligence, discipline, and precision. After completing his education in biology, chemistry, and naturopathic medicine, he found his calling in German biological medicine, a branch of naturopathy that integrates cutting-edge science and precision with the millennia-old wisdom of natural healing techniques. But just learning in a laboratory setting wasn’t enough. Dr. Dhanani set off on a journey that took him from Canada to Europe to Africa and beyond, to understand what lies at the most advanced frontiers of Biological Medicine. Since establishing the Centre for Biological Medicine in 2002, he has transformed the lives of thousands of individuals, including athletes, scientists, and other doctors at the highest levels of their professions. His internationally renowned reputation – particularly in the naturopathic treatment of chronic degenerative disease – has led to research collaborations with Nobel Prize winners, and turned Dr. Dhanani into one of naturopathic medicine’s most sought-after speakers. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fascinating history and world of biological medicine, and a German pioneer of medicine that Dr. Dhanani learned from...9:15 The goal is to identify the "root cause" of a symptom or problem. It's a combination of diagnostic tools and innovative thought processes. "We look to see what 'outside the box' is influencing what is 'inside the box.'" What is the relationship between biological medicine and bioregulatory medicine? Only substantive difference is that of vernacular. Both are looking at the body's capacity to heal; responses to symptoms, or "punches" to your body. Cell communication: we believe cells speak via biochemistry. Dr. Fritz Albert Popp: pioneer of biophotonic signaling of cells. The Baden Baden Biological Medicine conference in Germany. Energy medicine has a larger role to play than physical medicine. -The most interesting biohacks coming out of Europe, including the Mora machine for detoxification and new types of laser treatments for red blood cells...21:55 Just like we use words to communicate, certain bodies require light and sound to communicate. The Mora machine uses electronics and sound to drive specific frequencies into the system. We can increase the amount of glutathione in your body by simply giving the frequency of glutathione without injecting it. You're providing a mechanism to carry the molecule into the body energetically. Weber Intravenous Laser Therapy Different color lights (not LED) affects communication between cells. Depth of penetration of LED lights isn't as efficacious as lasers. -Where 23andme genetic testing falls short, and what Dr. Dhanani has discovered when it comes to the truth about genetic testing and genomics...29:18 You're only as good as the technology available.  Tests must be 1) Accurate, 2) Reproducible and 3) Functionally relevant. 23andme uses "SNIPS" which are not functionally relevant; they're good for data collection and perhaps ancestry. For illustration: You don't assume the forest is unwell because one tree in it is unwell. Look at associations of SNIPS. MTHFR is one of many we can examine. Anywhere between 15-40% error rate with consumer tests like 23andme. CNV (copy number variance) D2C tests don't tell you whether you have one or two copies of a particular gene. You get a distorted view of your level of detox. The type of genetic testing is applicable for testing for illegal substances. 23andme also doesn't test for insertion/deletion genes. -Why Ben can't absorb Vitamin D from sunlight, and why he must supplement with Vitamin D instead...52:00 Vitamin D is actually a pro-hormone, more than an actual vitamin. 125 hydroxy vitamin D is the actual component. Some people are not genetically predisposed to absorb the 125 hydroxy from sunlight; it's necessary to transport it via supplements. Thorne Vitamin D

The Moral Imperative for Building Resilient Brains | Skyla M. Herod | TEDxAzusaPacificUniversity

16:43
Why do some people seem to be more resilient to life stress than others? In this talk, neuroscientist Skyla Herod discusses the impact of early life stress on not just a child’s behavioral choices, but the development of the entire brain itself – and how innovations in neuroscience can inform the environment we create for our children, which has lifelong, biological results. Dr. Skyla M. Herod is a behavioral neuroscientist and Fulbright scholar. Skyla’s laboratory examines the role of early life stress exposure and availability of various neurotransmitter systems in the neuroplasticity of fetal brain development and in determining susceptibility stress-induced disorders in adulthood. Skyla earned her Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience from Oregon Health and Sciences University and previously worked at the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Beaverton, Oregon. At Azusa Pacific University, she continues her work in the neuroendocrinology of the stress response in genetics. Jeff Petty, MD - Hematology and Oncology - Wake Forest Baptist Health

02:09
Dr. Jeff Petty is an oncologist at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Petty specializes in the treatment of lung cancer at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist. Learn more about Dr. Petty: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Faculty/Petty-William-Jeffrey.htm The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Comprehensive-Cancer-Center/ TRANSCRIPT: My name is Jeff Petty and I'm a physician in the Medical Oncology Department. I'm the director of the Thoracic Oncology Program- my specialty is taking care of patients with lung cancer. My studies in lung cancer started during my residency. I did my residency at Duke Medical Center down the road. After moving up to my fellowship at Dartmouth, I continued to study lung cancer and got involved in laboratory research at that time. My laboratory continued for quite a while, looking at new strategies to treating lung cancer by studying cell culture models and other bench laboratory techniques. That seemed to prepare me pretty well for a lot of the current reality of thoracic oncology- which is understanding the genetics of a cancer, understanding how a cancer develops so that you can target its weaknesses. The laboratory background is something that I really treasure. My philosophy when taking care of patients with lung cancer is to try to understand the patient first- to try to understand where they are in their lives- where their families are- as well as where the disease is. Sometimes the challenges with facing lung cancer have to do not only with the prognosis, but also the prospect of taking on treatments and what that means for a patient and their family. I try to get the best care for every patient- but that's different for every patient. So my time on the other side of the white coat involves my family. My daughter actually is a patient here in oncology. She has ALL and has been treated for that- is in complete remission. She has a wonderful physician- Tom McLean- who's been just an amazing resource for us as a family and has taught me a lot as a physician.

PTC: A merger of technology and human ingenuity at NS and across the industry

05:57
Norfolk Southern is on track with its PTC Implementation Plan to meet the 2018 and 2020 goals. PTC, or Positive Train Control, is technology designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments caused by excessive speed, unauthorized incursions by trains into sections of track where repairs are being made, and movements of a train through an improperly aligned track switch. The U.S. Congress has required that railroads install PTC on tracks that carry passenger trains or toxic-by-inhalation materials. NS is implementing PTC along approximately 8,000 track miles at a projected cost of around $1.8 billion. The installation of PTC capability involves work on thousands of locomotives; a large new wireless communications network; and thousands of trackside devices connected to signals, switches, and other wayside devices. Here is an update on Norfolk Southern's progress at the close of 2016: The NS Engineering team has installed: •2,758 radio towers •2,976 wayside interface units •68 switch position monitors •2,685 wayside radios •321 base station radios The NS Mechanical team has installed and readied: •2,108 locomotives with onboard computers •2,178 locomotives with PTC displays •1,468 locomotives with PTC-capable event recorders •1,304 locomotives with PTC-220 radios •More than 1,300 locomotives are fully-equipped and PTC-operable. •NS is operating PTC trains in revenue service demonstration runs across 1,020 miles of track. •NS has trained more than 10,350 employees and their supervisors on job-specific PTC material. April Fool's 2015 - Message - Convo

04:34
Through over a decade of technological advancements in VRS, one thing has always remained the same: the video screen design. We have always seen the Video Interpreter and ourselves. Watch our video to see how we're finally changing that. For more information on the work by the researchers in the video, go to: Dorsality (Robert Sirvage)- https://youtu.be/EPTrOO6EYCY Deaf Studies Lab (Peter Hauser)- deafscientists.com VL2 (Melissa Malzkuhn)- vl2.gallaudet.edu TRANSCRIPT: Wayne: Today, we have Video Relay Service (VRS) functioning, but if you take a look back, you’ll find that the technological advancements have been incredibly fast. We started with a big, clunky computer with a webcam on top, plugged in with an usb. The Internet was painfully slow. We kept progressing until we changed to a Videophone on a TV with much faster Internet. Now, we have our phones that we can pick up and use from our pockets. But, the question here is, while the technology has changed rapidly, has the service aspect of VRS also changed? Ever since the idea [of VRS] came into the picture, the design of the screen has been the same. The interpreter fills the screen with a small box of self-view in the corner. That hasn’t changed at all. Convo took a look at this design and wondered how we could change it and improve it to make those of us who are singing feel more connected in a way that just feels right. Robert: Yes, regardless of the quality of the interaction with the interpreter, it’s very important to find a way to connect directly to the hearing caller. Even if the hearing caller doesn’t know how to sign— that’s why I’m using the interpreter— I still need cues from the contextual information of the hearing caller. Seeing their demeanor, their meaning, their facial expressions, the way they empathize, and their environment help us to get on the same wavelength and form a dorsal connection. This dorsal connection is more important than words, in my opinion. Melissa: Seeing with our eyes is how we process our worlds. It is how we absorb information, so it’s really interesting how through visual modality, we see thing and our brains work with plasticity. Wayne: That dorsal connection is something Convo truly felt inspired by. That was the problem; when you’re in a VRS call, you can see the interpreter, but where’s the hearing person? If we found a way to pull that hearing person in, would that make a difference? Peter: I’ve done research for over 20 years on how Deaf people’s brains operate in relation to sign language. Oh, it’s very important for Deaf people to see the person they're talking with at all times. If you don’t see that person, your brain will make guessworks or just stop working or lighting up brain neurons. If you do see, however, your brain will work more, light up more neurons, work faster, and be able to control things like attention, emotion, and more. Wayne: It’s proven to be true; when you pull in the hearing person and see that person plus the interpreter, we feel more in sync with the conversation. Can you imagine we’ve gone all these years with the same video screen design? Now, we’re changing this. Melissa: This is remarkable. I saw this design and observed it. The concept of that is just… The infinity design is incredible; it really fits the core of being Deaf-centric. Robert: This is a big technological leap, a huge advancement. Peter: It impacts the Deaf brain because we finally have more access to information. I’ll go and meet you on Monday.
