09:42
The Business Model Canvas - 9 Steps to Creating a Successful Business Model - Startup Tips The Business Model Canvas, is a strategic management and entrepreneurial tool. It allows you to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot your business model. The Business Model Canvas is comprised of 9 key segments: The left hand section of the Business Model Canvas is the Infrastructure section and comprises three key areas: Key Activities: The most important activities in executing a company's value proposition. Key Resources: The resources that are necessary to create value for the customer. Partner Network: In order to optimize operations and reduce risks of a business model, organization usually cultivate buyer-supplier relationships so they can focus on their core activity. The middle section of the canvas describes the business offering and is the value proposition delivered to different customer segments. Value Propositions: The collection of products and services a business offers to meet the needs of its customers. According to Osterwalder, (2004), a company's value proposition is what distinguishes itself from its competitors. The value proposition provides value through various elements such as newness, performance, customization, "getting the job done", design, brand/status, price, cost reduction, risk reduction, accessibility, and convenience/usability. The value propositions may be: Quantitative – price and efficiency Qualitative – overall customer experience and outcome The right hand side of the Business Model Canvas describes the customers, the channels through which you deliver services and and the relationships you have with your customers. Customer Segments: To build an effective business model, a company must identify which customers it tries to serve. Various sets of customers can be segmented based on the different needs and attributes to ensure appropriate implementation of corporate strategy meets the characteristics of selected group of clients. Channels: A company can deliver its value proposition to its targeted customers through different channels. Effective channels will distribute a company’s value proposition in ways that are fast, efficient and cost effective. An organization can reach its clients either through its own channels (store front), partner channels (major distributors), or a combination of both. Customer Relationships: To ensure the survival and success of any businesses, companies must identify the type of relationship they want to create with their customer segments. The bottom section of the canvas describes the finances. Cost Structure: This describes the most important monetary consequences while operating under different business models. A company's DOC. Revenue Streams: The way a company makes income from each customer segment. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIypuA7lS-FsVG6cMlNCK2w?sub_confirmation=1 Check out some of our other videos Compensation claims - how long should it take https://youtu.be/NuxfrgSTg78 LLC vs S Corp https://youtu.be/4xNCnf9hitw Minizing tax https://youtu.be/ybSnFb6rx6Y How to fund a startup https://youtu.be/ctzDb59sw5M Kickstarter success Ep 1 https://youtu.be/2EG78JNZ7nA Kickstarter success Ep 2 https://youtu.be/ZMlq5CmUNz8 How to pitch to investors with Guy Kawasaki https://youtu.be/-epR-uGlv4M If you are interested in sustainability issues then check this video out The Sustainable Business Model Canvas https://youtu.be/gVimMEI2u2w

The science of emotions: Jaak Panksepp at TEDxRainier

17:40
Given an inherent subjective nature, emotions have long been a nearly impenetrable topic for scientific research. Affective neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp explains a modern approach to emotions, and how taking seriously the emotions of other animals might soon improve the lives of millions. Jaak Panksepp introduced the concept of Affective Neuroscience in 1990, consisting of an overarching vision of how mammalian brains generate experienced affective states in animals, as effective models for fathoming the primal evolutionary sources of emotional feelings in human beings. This work has implications for further developments in Biological Psychiatry, ranging from an understanding of the underlying brain disorders, to new therapeutic strategies. Panksepp is a Ph.D. Professor and Baily Endowed Chair of Animal Well-Being Science, College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University. His scientific contributions include more than 400 papers devoted to the study of basic emotional and motivational processes of the mammalian brain. He has conducted extensive research on brain and bodily mechanisms of feeding and energy-balance regulation, sleep physiology, and most importantly the study of emotional processes, including associated feelings states, in other animals. This talk was given November 9, 2013 in Seattle at TEDxRainier, a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

2017 Maps of Meaning 12: Final: The Divinity of the Individual

02:25:56
In this, the final Maps of Meaning lecture for 2017, I review the year and its offerings: What is a belief system? Why are people so inclined to engage in conflict to protect their belief systems? It's partly because our belief systems are not only systems of belief, but structures that serve to render everyone who participates in that belief and its dramatization and acting out in the world predictable, trustworthy and cooperative (even when competing). Is there a hierarchy of rank or value among belief systems, or are they merely arbitrary? What is the relationship between descriptions of the objective world and moral guidelines? How do you determine how to conduct yourself in the world? What should you do (and is that question even genuine -- or answerable?) What inbuilt structures do you bring into the world, as a consequence of biological evolution, that help you orient yourself in life, in the face of its overwhelming complexity? What is the relationship between the games that children learn to play when becoming socialized and the cultural structures that guide us in broader society? How is all this related to the underlying symbolic structures (religious structures) that sit at the base of our societies and belief structures? Dice Media | What The Folks | Web Series | S01E01 - Arranged Family

24:55
'What The Folks' is a journey of how modern families are breaking stereotypes, overcoming generation gaps, and growing to love one another, despite having starkly different world views. The show encapsulates the familial struggles of Nikhil, a young man who is forced to live with his in-laws for a few weeks. Episode 1: Murphy’s law works on Nikhil, and everything he does from the moment he enters his in-laws' house, goes wrong. A huge blunder greatly upsets Prakash, his father-in-law. He is really sorry about it, but both of them are unable to have an honest conversation about it. Will they resolve their issues? Or will things only go downhill from here? Whatever the case, one thing is for sure - the giggles and chuckles won't stop through the episode! 2017 Maps of Meaning 1: Context and Background

02:31:27
In this lecture, I discuss the context within which the theory I am delineating through this course emerge: that of the cold war. What is belief? Why is it so important to people? Why will they fight to protect it? I propose that belief unites a culture's expectations and desires with the actions of its people, and that the match between those two allows for cooperative action and maintains emotional stability. I suggest, further, that culture has a deep narrative structure, presenting the world as a forum for action, with characters representing the individual, the known, and the unknown -- or the individual, culture and nature -- or the individual, order and chaos. Create a ball/sphere shape in sketchup

02:31
Making a ball/sphere shape and general Sketch up notes (Mac) Wimbledon College of Art 2011 Making a sphere 1. Draw a circle shape on the ground suraface of the origin point where the red, green and blue axis points meet. 2. lower your view point to ground level 3. Draw a second circle vertical and fron the centre of the ground circle, make this circle smaller than the first 4. Double click select the ground circle and then select the Follow Me tool and click the virtical circle, the sphere will form 5. Double click select the flat ground circle and delete Making shapes Edge (outline collection on lines that make up a shape) Surface (to create a surface all edges need to make an enclosed shape, no gaps, heal the gabs to create an enclosed shape) Edges must be coplanar (lines need to be on the same plane to create a surface) A surface can be draw on any orientation as long as the are on the same plane. An edge will display its aixs (cjange colour) and snap to help make it coplanar Axis -- This is the red, green and blue lines you see on your opening environment: Blue -- Vertical Green -- horizontal (ground plane) Red - horizontal (ground plane) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system) Inferring - sketch up will help you line up edges, how do you ensure straight edges? Hover for 2 seconds on the point you want to line up with Then move back to your original line and locate roughly the position, when you reach the correct position, sketchup will show a green line. Inference points (coloured dots) -- pointer always snaps to points Endpoints (Green dot) Middle points on an edge (Cyan dot) Anywhere else on an edge (Red dot) Where two edges cross (Black dot) NOTE: Draw only from edge to edge (DO NOT cross over edges (lines), always use the inference points to confirm the edge before continuing with a line if it crosses another line) This also applies to all shapes. Push Pull tool -- draw an object and transform with this tool freehand or begin to transform and add precise measurements if required by adding sizes and enter by pressing return e.g hit any keyboard measurement - 5' = 5 feet, 5" + 5 inches, 5cm and 5m for 5 meters Push Pull Inferring -- make objects the same size by using the push pull tool on one object and without letting go of the mouse move to another object it will mimic its size. It will jump around a bit but once it locates a surface it will lock it to place. Create openings by using the push pull tool; create a shape on an object and push pull the shape through itself until it disappears at the other side, shape need to be parallel and clear of edges of the either side. Select • Click, double click and treble click. • Click and drag to select a whole object • Click and drag to the left to select any content within the selection window • Click and drag to the right will only select content that fits within the window selection area. • Shift click to multi select add or subtract multiple selections • Shift and Alt to subtract and Alt to add Creative Commons License This work by Chris Follows is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation?

02:00:59
What may have started as a science fiction speculation—that perhaps the universe as we know it is a computer simulation—has become a serious line of theoretical and experimental investigation among physicists, astrophysicists, and philosophers. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, hosts and moderates a panel of experts in a lively discussion about the merits and shortcomings of this provocative and revolutionary idea. The 17th annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate took place at The American Museum of Natural History on April 5, 2016. 2016 Asimov Panelists: David Chalmers Professor of philosophy, New York University Zohreh Davoudi Theoretical physicist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology James Gates  Theoretical physicist, University of Maryland Lisa Randall Theoretical physicist, Harvard University Max Tegmark  Cosmologist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History.  In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate — generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work — bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery.  Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium. 2017 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: De-Extinction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LnAtMeSVeY&index=1&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZA3NPpBs&index=2&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2015 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Water, Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSF79uS3t04&index=3&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Selling Space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbmFeEIKBFI&index=4&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2013 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Existence of Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLz6uUuMp8&index=5&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2012 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Faster Than the Speed of Light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlLW60wOjo&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=6 2011 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Theory of Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb8_3BUHcuw&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=7 Rose Center Anniversary Isaac Asimov Debate: Is Earth Unique? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ji_GdAk9vU&index=8&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&t=25s *** Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... Revit 2015 Tutorial Creating Topography with the Toposurface Tool | Black Spectacles

06:04
View the entire course: Revit 2015 Basics- Conceptual & Schematic Design https://blackspectacles.com/courses/revit-2015-basics-conceptual-and-schematic-design Let's get into the modeling aspects of this. The project that we're building today, of course, is the Case House, also known as the Stahl House, Number 22 in Los Angeles, and I did not have any topography information other than just Google Earth and doing a little bit of research. So I went ahead and built the topography of what I sort of think it is in Los Angeles. So this is the topography as you can see right here and I have also built some what are called, "Pads" which are essentially the foundation or the flat pad for where the building is going to be built. Now, the reason I went ahead and did this ahead of time and not part of the class is because this can be a very tedious process to build. You're going to go to "Massing & Site" and on the "Massing & Site" tab, there is this "Toposurface" button. You click on that and it goes into what's known as a "Sketch Mode" and these are all of the buttons. You can see that this tab on the ribbon is kind of a teal color, that color indicates that it's called a "Context Menu" which means it only appears when you are in the "Toposurface Edit Mode" and these two buttons right here is an indication that you are in an "Edit Mode." So this is "Finish Edit Mode" or this is "Cancel" the edit mode. Now, the other thing to keep in mind when you're building a topography is that it always deals with what are called "Absolute Elevation Numbers" or "Elevations Above Sea Level." There are no relative elevation numbers so keep that in mind. I'm going to leave this as zero but obviously your site is going to be higher than zero. So to create a topography from scratch, the way that I built the one for this class, you're going to just simply place points. So if I had just clicks four points here, it's all at layers here or all at elevation zero, if I just click those four points and then say "Finish," this is my topography. If I go to the "3D View," you can see that this is it right here. Now, I'm going to turn on the "Shade Mode" which is this button right here, set it to consistent color, that's just so you can see it a little more clearly. So this is the topography that I created, completely flat. Go back to "Level 1" view. If I click on that topography again and I say "Edit Surface," once again, that only appears when you click on the topography, it goes back into the "Sketch Mode" and I can manipulate these points now and to start to add some contours to this surface. So if I click on those two points or I select those two points, I can go up here and I can change that to "3 feet." And you can see as soon as I change that to three feet, it adds a couple of contour lines. By default, Revit will add a contour line at each foot. Now, you can change that. You can have it do every five feet, every ten feet, whatever you want in terms of how the contours are displayed. That's completely up to you. So this is just changing these two points and what Revit is doing is it's just interpolating between these two points, zero to three, and it's putting the one-foot and the two-foot at equal spacing between those points. But as we all know, contours aren't always equal, so you can place additional points. So if I say "Place Point" and I put a number "1" in there, I can then place that point anywhere on this surface, and I can do something like that. And so now, Revit is interpolating between these two points but now, the distance between these two is set. Now, there's a problem here. You can see that as I add these points, Revit doesn't always want to follow exactly where I'm putting these points. I would like that contour to kind of dip down and go around where those points are but you can see how it takes this shortcut across there. Well, Revit has a tendency to do that. It's one of those things that you just have to kind of deal with and how I deal with it is I add extra point that is ever so slightly higher than those. So I say "1 foot 1" and I place that point right in the middle. Now, sometimes you have to place multiple points but basically, by doing that, it forces the contour to follow the point path that you've created. Now obviously, the more points you put in there, the smoother the line begins to look. This is basically how you create a topography from scratch. Fearless Eye, Inc. - Longview Farms Master Plan: Common Area Design Map

00:11
Project type: Environmental and Land Use: Longview Farms Master Plan Description: Longview Farms is a subdivision in Lee's Summit, MO with a historical heritage linked to original Longview Farms built in the early 1900's by R.A. Long. Although the subdivision was complete, the challenge was that there was no master plan in place. The job was to create a Master Plan and carry it forward. Visualizations Produced: First, an analysis of the existing conditions, topology, hydrology and utility were mapped and further analyzed. From the onsite analysis an overlay of the new Master Plan was generated for the common areas, streetscapes, and recreational areas. Finally, a Master Plan was developed that phased in the new infrastructure as well as replaced dated elements over an 8 year period. A concept was also generated for development's entry monuments. The Master Plan was then used as a presentation tool to the community to raise the funding necessary to implement the plan. The community voted and approved an assessment fee that meets the budget requirements of the Master Plan. About us: Since 1992, we at Fearless Eye have produced hundreds of computer visualizations for professionals who are solving complex problems in the fields of law, art, science, and engineering. We believe our clients deserve high quality computer visualization services that are accurate, defensible, and aesthetically designed. 2017 Maps of Meaning 8: Neuropsychology of Symbolic Representation

02:21:22
In this lecture, I discuss the relationship between the basic categories of imagistic/symbolic representation and brain function, noting that the very hemispheres of the brain are adapted, right/left to the environmental or experiential permanence of chaos/order or unexplored/explored territory, with consciousness serving the Logos role of communicative explorer (a function related in one of its deepest manifestations to the function of the hypothalamically grounded dopaminergic systems). What is Design Thinking

04:21
Design Thinking Suppose you are part of a thriving business and need to branch out and find that next big thing. Or say you want to change a behavior, like getting people...a lot of people...to use less energy in their homes. How would you go about it? Design thinking is a powerful tool to tackle the unknown. It's a means of going on an expedition, without a map, without even knowing the destination, but with the confidence that you'll end up somewhere great. Let's make it tangible with an example that captures the five key elements of design thinking. Daylight was given the challenge of getting kids in America to move more to help fight childhood obesity. The project started with an idea--provide kids with a digital music player that has a motion sensor, then give them rewards based on their activity. But the big question was, would kids really use it? What could make the experience so compelling that they would use it long enough to see the health benefits. Learn from people We began by talking with kids. We spent time in their homes and schools, across the country. We listened to them share their motivations, habits, delights and frustrations. The research included kids in the mainstream, but also incredibly active kids and the very sedentary. It turns out that those at the extremes are really good at giving a voice to problems that those in the middle might feel, but have a harder time putting their finger on. Find patterns We captured our observations on hundreds of post-it notes and laid them all out to make sense of what we learned. Using informed intuition, we looked for patterns that pointed to opportunities. Daniel said, "I get bored with solo video games, it's the multiplayer ones that keep me coming back." Meg said, "I don't wear my ipod when I'm running because I want to talk to people." Define design principles These quotes along with others, revealed one of the design principles that would help us get to a successful concept. "Facilitate social interaction at all times" Many such design principles emerged. Together, they formed the guideposts of an experience that we felt confident would resonate with kids. Make Tangible We asked ourselves "How Might We" questions to bridge the gap from design principles to specific ideas and then quickly turned the best of them into rough prototypes. Building physical devices out of simple cardboard and mocking up digital experiences with paper and pen allowed us to learn quickly. 5. Iterate Relentlessly. With each prototype we tweaked and evolved the concept. We brought digital and physical models to kids to listen and learn. The concept evolved until we got to a compelling solution. Where we ended up was not the original idea of a digital music player. It was instead a small activity monitor that kids could clip onto their clothes or slip into a pocket. It was a portal to an online world that allowed kids to share and celebrate their real-world accomplishments with each other and their families. In a three month clinical trial, the impact was a 59% increase in physical activity. Learn from people Look for patterns Define design principles Make tangible Iterate relentlessly Whatever the challenge, design thinking is a powerful tool to reveal new ways of thinking and doing. What in your world could benefit from design thinking?

Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford full testimonies before the Senate Judiciary Committee

09:06:12
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were teenagers, both testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday. Ford said during her testimony that she was "100 percent" sure that Kavanaugh assaulted her, while Kavanaugh said that he was "100 percent" sure he had not done anything of the kind. The differences are irreconcilable. After the full day of dramatic testimony, Kavanaugh's supporters in the Senate were largely ready to move forward with his confirmation vote, though a few key senators remained undecided Thursday night as his confirmation hangs in the balance. The Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation Friday. How to Make an Attractive City

We've grown good at making many things in the modern world - but strangely the art of making attractive cities has been lost. Here are some key principles for how to make attractive cities once again. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/fwFNPV FURTHER READING “Cities are a big deal. We pretty much all have to live in them. We should try hard to get them right. So few cities are nice, very few out of many thousands are really beautiful; embarrassingly the more appealing ones tend to be old, which is weird because we’re mostly much better at making things now...” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/6wYBGc MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/RWcyzt Watch more films on CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism Do you speak a different language to English? How to Pass the Test When You Haven’t Read the Book

01:43
Watch more How to Improve Your Reading videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/12363-How-to-Pass-the-Test-When-You-Havent-Read-the-Book You kept putting off reading the book—now the test is tomorrow and you haven’t even cracked the cover! Here’s how to pass anyway. Step 1: Search online Type the name of the book and 'essays' into your search engine, and you’ll find tons of information about the plot, characters, and subtext. Don’t trust everything you read, but figure out what the consensus seems to be. Step 2: Get the study guide Buy a study guide for the book at a bookstore. Not only will it give you a detailed plot synopsis, but it should go through the main points of each chapter and provide insights. Step 3: Log onto Amazon Look up the book on Amazon.com and read people’s reviews and opinions on the book. It’s like being in a book club—without actually going anywhere, talking to anyone, or reading a book! Tip If you’re taking a multiple choice test and have no idea of the answer, go for either B or C—research shows these are the correct answer more often than A and D. Step 4: Read selectively Read the table of contents, the prologue, the first and last page of each chapter, and the last few pages. In ten minutes you’ll get the gist of the book. Step 5: Find a movie See if the book was ever made into a movie. But be warned: Hollywood takes many liberties with literature—just because they all live happily ever after in the film doesn’t mean they do in the book. Did You Know? Fewer than half of Americans over 18 read just for pleasure.

Progress Circle Chart in Excel - Part 1 of 2

07:11
The progress circle (doughnut) chart displays the percentage of completion on a single metric. This is a simple chart that can be used in dashboards to show the progress towards a goal or target. It's basically a progress bar chart in the shape of a circle or doughnut. DOWNLOAD the file: https://www.excelcampus.com/charts/progress-doughnut-chart/ In this first video, we look at how to create the progress doughnut chart in Excel. It is a simple chart that just requires 1 doughnut chart and a formula. In part 2 of the video series, I explain how to apply conditional formatting to the chart so the color of the bar changes as the progress level changes. How to Extract Data from a Spreadsheet using VLOOKUP, MATCH and INDEX

15:54
When you need to find and extract a column of data from one table and place it in another, use the VLOOKUP function. This function works in any version of Excel in Windows and Mac, and also in Google Sheets. It allows you to find data in one table using some identifier it has in common with another table. The two tables can be on different sheets or even on different workbooks. There is also an HLOOKUP function, which does the same thing, but with data arranged horizontally, across rows. See the companion tutorial on Tuts+ at https://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-extract-data-from-a-spreadsheet-using-vlookup-match-and-index--cms-20641. By Bob Flisser.

Great Animation Shows How Deep Humans Dug Into The Earth

02:54
Courtesy of Tech Insider --- Extreme Journey to the center of the Earth - Scientific drilling into the Earth is a way for scientists to probe the Earth's sediments, crust, and upper mantle. In addition to rock samples, drilling technology can unearth samples of connate fluids and of the subsurface biosphere, mostly microbial life, preserved in drilled samples. Most of the technology used for drilling come from advances in the oil and gas industry. Scientific drilling is carried out on land by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and at sea by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). Scientific drilling on the continents includes drilling down into solid ground as well as drilling from small boats on lakes. Sampling thick glaciers and ice sheets to obtain ice cores is related but will not be described further here. Like probes sent into outer space, scientific drilling is a technology used to obtain samples from places that people cannot reach. Human beings have descended as deep as 2,080 m (6,822 ft) in Voronya Cave, the world's deepest known cave, located in the Caucasus mountains of the country of Georgia. Gold miners in South Africa regularly go deeper than 3,400 m, but no human has ever descended to greater depths than this below the Earth's solid surface. As depth increases into the Earth, temperature and pressure rise. Temperatures in the crust increase about 15°C per kilometer, making it impossible for humans to exist at depths greater than several kilometers, even if it was somehow possible to keep shafts open in spite of the tremendous pressure. Scientific drilling is interdisciplinary and international in scope. Individual scientists cannot generally undertake scientific drilling projects alone. Teamwork between scientists, engineers, and administrators is often required for success in planning and in carrying out a drilling project, analyzing the samples, and interpreting and publishing the results in scientific journals. Humans have reached the moon and are planning to return samples from Mars, but when it comes to exploring the land deep beneath our feet, we have only scratched the surface of our planet. This may be about to change with a $1 billion mission to drill 6 km (3.7 miles) beneath the seafloor to reach the Earth's mantle -- a 3000 km-thick layer of slowly deforming rock between the crust and the core which makes up the majority of our planet -- and bring back the first ever fresh samples. It could help answer some of our biggest questions about the origins and evolution of Earth itself, with almost all of the sea floor and continents that make up the Earth´s surface originating from the mantle. Geologists involved in the project are already comparing it to the Apollo Moon missions in terms of the value of the samples it could yield. However, in order to reach those samples, the team of international scientists must first find a way to grind their way through ultra-hard rocks with 10 km-long (6.2 miles) drill pipes -- a technical challenge that one of the project co-leaders Damon Teagle, from the UK's University of Southampton calls, "the most challenging endeavor in the history of Earth science." 'A ship flying in space:' Earth seen through the eyes of an astronaut Their task will be all the more difficult for being conducted out in the middle of the ocean. It is here that the Earth´s crust is at its thinnest at around 6 km compared to as much as 60 km (37.3 miles) on land. Drilling all the way to the mantle would also give geologists a look at what they call the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or Moho, for short. Above this mysterious zone, named for the Croatian seismologist who discovered it in 1909, seismic waves travel at around 4.3 miles per second, a rate consistent with those waves traveling through basalt, or cooled lava. Below the Moho, the waves rip along at around 5 miles per second, similar to the rate they travel through a silica-poor type of igneous rock called peridotite. The Moho typically lies between 3 to 6 miles below the ocean floor and anywhere between 12 to 56 miles beneath the continents. This zone has long been considered the crust-mantle boundary, where material gradually cools and sticks to the overlying crust. But some lab studies suggest it’s possible that the Moho represents the zone where water seeping down from the overlying crust reacts with mantle peridotites to create a type of mineral called serpentine. This possibility is exciting, Dick and MacLeod suggest. The geochemical reactions that generate serpentine also produce hydrogen, which can then react with seawater to produce methane, a source of energy for some types of bacteria. Or, the researchers note, the Moho could be something else entirely unknown to science. Early Computing: Crash Course Computer Science #1

11:53
Hello, world! Welcome to Crash Course Computer Science! So today, we’re going to take a look at computing’s origins, because even though our digital computers are relatively new, the need for computation is not. Since the start of civilization itself, humans have had an increasing need for special devices to help manage laborious tasks, and as the scale of society continued to grow, these computational devices began to play a crucial role in amplifying our mental abilities. From the abacus and astrolabe to the difference engine and tabulating machine, we’ve come a long way to satisfying this increasing need, and in the process completely transformed commerce, government, and daily life. Goal Setting

22:48
C'mon over to http://www.marieforleo.com/2013/12/danielle-laporte-goals-desire/ where the main discussion happens after the episode! Goal setting can be overwhelming for many people, but it doesn't have to be. If you reframe your goals and start by focusing on how you ultimately want to feel instead of what you want to attain or accomplish, your goals will have more depth. In this video, you'll learn Danielle LaPorte's top four tips for discovering your core desired feelings. 1. Feel What Feels Good. When goal setting this way, first ask yourself how you want to feel in three main categories: lifestyle and livelihood, body and wellness, relationships and society. Write stream of consciousness lists for each category listing out your desired feelings for each. 2. Look For Patterns. Identify the words you repeat in these lists, or notice the patterns that are coming up. Begin to narrow down your list of words that will help with goal setting through your desired feelings. 3. Declare Your Core Desired Feelings. Ask yourself what's beneath a feeling for you. For example, maybe "success" is really about freedom, or love, or creativity. This is a good time to turn to a dictionary and look up the definitions of words -- every word is its own world. 4. Ask Yourself: What do I want to do, have or experience to create my core desired feelings? This is the beginning of goal setting with soul. This is where you make connections between how you want to feel and what will actually help you feel that way. MBS is transforming Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Mohammad bin Salman was designated as Saudi Arabia's new crown prince in June 2017. Since then, he has rapidly consolidated power and led Saudi Arabia towards some progressive reforms, such as granting women the right to drive. He also has plans to privatize certain segments of the economy, with the goal of reducing Saudi Arabia's economic dependency on oil. These changes, along with a suppression of Saudi Arabia's religious Right, could potentially begin to destabilize one of the Middle East's most powerful nations. Google Personal Growth Series: Mindsight: The New Science of

01:02:52
Google Tech Talks April 22, 2009 ABSTRACT This interactive talk will examine two major questions: What is the mind? and How can we create a healthy mind? We'll examine the interactions among the mind, the brain, and human relationships and explore ways to create a healthy mind, an integrated brain, and mindful, empathic relationships. Here is one surprising finding: the vast majority (about 95%) of mental health practitioners around the globe, and even many scientists and philosophers focusing on the mind, do not have a definition of what the mind is! In this talk, well offer a working definition of the mind and practical implications for how to perceive and strengthen the mind itself—a learnable skill called mindsight. Then well build on this perspective to explore ways that the mind, the brain, and our relationships are influenced by digital information flow and also how they can be moved toward healthy functioning. If you rely on the information portrayed in this video, you assume responsibility for the results of your actions. Playing with experimental rockets could result in serious injury, property damage and/or legal ramifications. Have fun, but always think ahead, and remember that every project you try is at YOUR OWN RISK. Music By: Music by Scott & Brendo “Kitten Air” Instrumental iTunes: http://bit.ly/ScottBrendoiTunes YouTube: www.youtube.com/scottandbrendo Project Inspired By: Ritchie Kinmont with http://www.sonicdad.com (http://bit.ly/SDRandomizerProject) Project History & More Info: This project was inspired by my good friend Ritchie Kinmont with http://www.sonicdad.com. We collaborated together on a design for a rocket that could be powered by the sugar motors I showed you how to make in a previous video (http://bit.ly/SugarRocket) made with PVC, sugar, kitty litter, and stump remover. The new “Screw-Lock" version features threaded PVC risers, that allow the motors to quickly be changed, for faster turn-around times, and they have built in ejection charges for popping out the parachute at apogee. Last year I promised that if there was enough interest, I'd try to develop a rocket that could be used with the sugar motors .. and my goal was to build a version where the sugar motors could screw onto the bottom of the rocket for convenience. At the beginning of the year, the Sonic Dad team reached looking to do some kind of a collaboration, and the timing was perfect. So I asked Ritchie if he could help me engineer a sugar rocket. Most rocket clubs won't let you fly sugar motors, except on special experimental launch days. However, the “Randomizer” rocket can also be used with commercial “Estes” D12-3 and E9-6 black power motors. So if you go with those, there's a good chance they'll let you fly your rocket at any club launch. The rocket can fly over 1,000 feet high, and depending on the winds, can stay in the air for around 5 minutes while it floats back to the ground, so it's important to be super cautious where, and when, you launch to avoid doing any damage. This video completes the rocket building series, and I'm really excited to share my passion for building and launching rockets with completely home-made equipment. In my opinion, it's the best way to learn about how rocketry really works.
