This is something that most people get wrong when their cutting phase is over, and they end up gaining a significant amount of unwanted body fat as a result. After you've maintained a calorie deficit for a prolonged period, not only will your appetite and cravings be at their highest, but due to certain metabolic adaptations your body will also be primed for fat storage at that time. For that reason, it's very important that you have a concrete post diet plan in place to ensure that you don't erase the hard work you've put in up to that point. If you try to simply "eat on instinct" as you move into your bulking phase, you'll almost certainly over eat. When it comes to a cut to bulk transition, many people will recommend a "reverse dieting" protocol where calories are very slowly increased from week to week. However, a reverse diet is not necessary for most people since it will actually keep you in a net calorie deficit for several additional weeks as well as prolong the amount of time it takes to get your appetite under control and hormones back in balance. Instead, the best way to move from cutting to bulking is to simply get back to your calorie maintenance level as quickly as possible (you won't gain fat if it's done properly) and then move right into a surplus from there. The key thing to keep in mind here is that your maintenance calories post diet at the end of a cut are NOT the same as they were at the beginning. Your total body weight is now lower, and you're also expending fewer calories due to hormonal adjustments that have down regulated your metabolic rate. The simplest way to estimate your new maintenance level is to just multiply your body weight in pounds by 14. Or, if you were losing roughly 1 pound per week at the end of your cutting phase (a standard rate of fat loss), this would represent about a 500 calorie deficit, in which case you could just add 500 to your current intake. Use this as an estimated starting point, with the goal being to find the calorie intake that stabilizes your current weight. If you continue to lose weight on the new intake, add in 100 calories every week or so until your weight maintains. (Note that you will probably gain a couple pounds fairly quickly once your calories go up from increased glycogen, water retention and food volume, so make sure to take that into account) Once your weight stabilizes, add in a small calorie surplus to support lean bulking. 200-350 calories per day is a good guideline, with beginners using the higher end and intermediates the lower end. Advanced lifters can go even lower at about 100-150. When it comes to transitioning from cutting to bulking and getting yourself into muscle building mode without gaining unwanted fat, that's really all there is to it. Keep in mind that these calculations will never be perfect and that you'll always gain a little bit of fat when moving from a cut to bulk, but the idea is to just minimize it as best you can and increase your calories in a controlled manner. Losing fat and getting lean requires dedication and focus, so the last thing you want to do is throw all caution to the wind once your cutting phase is over and end up undoing the hard work you've put in. Put the science back in strength - http://athleanx.com/x/science Subscribe to this channel here - http://bit.ly/2b0coMW Bulking and cutting is one of the most popular methods of adding muscle fast, but does it work the way you hope it would? In this video, I’m going to show you how you can actually build muscle and burn fat at the same time and significantly change the look of your body by doing so. I will also cover some of the potential pitfalls on the way to the perfect bulk and cut that could be undercutting your end result. To start, it helps to discuss what the theory behind bulking and cutting is for putting on muscle. That discussion needs to start with a determination of what you ultimately want to look like at the end of your bulk and cut. If your goal is to wind up with nothing but pure lean muscle gain then you will have to identify that and understand that your cut is going to have to be precise and must be able to last for the duration. In other words, you will have to cut until every bit of excess body fat that you put on is no longer there, while making sure not to compromise any of the lean muscle mass you added in the process. If on the other hand you simply want to add “size”, for lack of a better term (meaning pack on partial amounts of lean muscle and body fat) then your goals and the practicality of the process would become much simpler to adhere to. For the purposes of this video and channel however, we are assuming that the end product of your bulk and cut would be to add pure lean muscle gains without body fat hiding what you have done. With this said, I argue that this whole process does not have to be segmented into a bulking phase and a cutting phase but rather can be achieved at once (with a significant impact on how you look and feel at the end). By being hypo caloric and maintaining a positive nitrogen balance you can definitely add muscle and burn fat at the same time, albeit at a slightly slower but much more consistent and maintainable rate. When the longevity of your appearance and gains is what is paramount, the alternative of spending half the year fat and a few months comfortable enough with your physique to take off your shirt is not an option. When you bulk and cut at the same time you can walk around 365 days a year looking your best while steadily accruing lean muscle year over year. The risk of bulking and then cutting is often that the adaptation to going into a sustainable hypo caloric diet becomes daunting and as soon as it cannot be maintained, the results are lost. Many people will enter into a bulk and never fully come out of it. There are many a gym filled with guys spending hours each week on cardio trying to reverse the effects of a long ago bulk gone wrong. If instead you focused on staying slightly hypocaloric while increasing your protein intake to support positive nitrogen balance needed to keep a net protein synthesis, you would find that you could add pure lean muscle more consistently. Now, this process will be a slightly slower one than trying to force your body to grow more quickly but the end result will be more sustainable and consistent. Burn fat faster than ever - http://athleanx.com/inferno Subscribe to this channel here - http://bit.ly/2b0coMW The best fat burning workout is one in which you aren’t simply doing low intensity cardio, but are incorporating weight training as well. The simple fact is, long term fat loss is going to depend on your ability to build as much lean muscle tissue as possible. Metabolically, this muscle tissue is going to increase your resting caloric burn much more than the body fat that exists at this moment. In this video, I show you a simple dumbbell complex that can be done with a barbell if you have access to a full gym or a more advanced home gym. The bottom line is, this sequence of four dumbbell exercises will get your heart rate soaring and your muscles working in very short order. Perform just 6 rounds this with little to no rest between exercises in the complex and a max of 90 seconds after each round. Your goal is to perform your complex training workouts at least once a week if not more. The key to successful complexes however is to not back load the complexes with exercises that are using relatively heavy weights or that demand high levels of technical skill. Most trainers that program complexes make these mistakes and also don’t take into account the accumulating fatigue. In order to combat the fatigue to maintain good form and the integrity of the exercise, you will want to perform this complex with a descending rep sequence. In other words, you will start off by performing 6 reps in the first round, 5 reps in the second round, 4 reps in the third, and so on and so forth until all rounds are done and you are doing just 1rep of each exercise in the last. Determine the weight you are going to use by choosing your 12RM for your dumbbell overhead shoulder press. Keep the same weight for all of the other exercises in this complex. Again, this is done so that while the weight may be on the light side for the exercises you are performing, it will not jeopardize your body or risk injury when performing them in a fatigued state. The key above all else is to not rest between movements. Simply transition from one exercise in the complex to the next and try not to rest the dumbbells at all when moving from one to the next. While the first round might not feel like much of a struggle, the subsequent rounds will quickly add up and make you feel as if your fat burning has just kicked into third gear! In this video, I’m going to show you the nutrition and training principles that Jesse has followed over the last 14 months that have allowed him to pack on 20 pounds of muscle mass without putting on fat. Even if you have been training for awhile and are close to your genetic potential for size, this video is going to help you to add at least a few pounds of muscle if you listen to the key points shared. The first thing we need to do is break the video up into the two major focal points, training and nutrition. They obviously go hand in hand and both are required to see your best gains. On the training side of things however, it starts with the order in which you attack your workouts. Many people will advise you to stick to a few basic lifts and simply aim to get stronger in them. As you increase your strength you will increase your size. While this is certainly true, there is a big problem that often comes along with the infatuation with adding weight to the bar as a measure of your progress and that is that true strength is eventually eclipsed by compensatory strength which leads to structural issues down the road. Think about it. Our bodies are masters of compensation. Give them a chance to figure out a way to take stress off the muscles and divert it to the joints and they will. This happens all the time on the big lifts since there are so many joints involved in performing them. The problem is, the compensations we make are often disguised and hidden really well. You still complete the reps and sets you were aiming to complete and you aren’t aware of the faulty patterning you are ingraining. As you continue to add strength and weight to the bar over the next few months and years, you are only worsening a problem that could have been overcome by instead first focusing on building proper body command and mind muscle control before being conscious of how quickly you were adding weight to the bar. The same can be said for being infatuated with the numbers not just on the sides of the weights you’re using but in the sets and reps you are performing. Far too often people become fixated on performing a certain number of reps that they forget the most important factor in lifting weights and that is the intensity of your effort and the amount of tension you are providing to the muscles you are trying to grow. Beyond this of course is the tendency to overlook the accessory lifts. I recently did an entire video dedicated to this and showed you how important these smaller exercises were to helping improve the performance on the big lifts. Here I show you once again how that can be so impactful on your strength and size when you correct this. On the nutrition side of things the eat big get big mentality simply isn’t true, not at least if you want to maximize lean gains and not have to worry about having to cut unwanted fat.
