It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. The process is taught in top design and business schools around the world. It has brought many businesses lots of happy customers and helped entrepreneurs from all around the world, to solve problems with innovative new solutions. Step 1: Empathize The purpose of step one is to conduct interviews that give you an idea about what people really care about. We need to empathize with their situation. For example, if you want to help old people, you might find that they want to keep the ability to walk around. In your conversations, they might share with you different ways they can do that. Later into the interview you'll want to dig a little deeper, look for personal stories or situations where things became difficult. Ideally, you redo the process with many people with the same problem. Step 2: Define the Problem Looking at the interviews, you can now understand the actual needs that people are trying to fulfill with certain activities. One way to do that is to underline the verbs or activities that the people mentioned when talking about their problems: like going for a walk, meeting old friends for tea, or simply going grocery shopping around the corner store. You might realize it's not so much about going out, but more about staying in touch. After your analysis, formulate a problem statement: “Some elderly are afraid to be lonely. The want to stay connected.” Step 3: Ideate Now focus only on the problem statement and come up with ideas that solve the problem. The point is not to get a perfect idea, but rather to come up with as many ideas: like unique virtual reality experiences, senior friendly hover boards or a modified pushcart. Whatever it is, sketch up your best ideas and show them to the people you are trying to help, so you get their feedback. Step 4: Prototype Now take a moment to reflect on what you have learned from your conversations about the different ideas. Ask yourself, how does your idea fit in the context of people's actual lives. Your solution could be a combination of a new idea and what is already being used. Then connect the dots, sketch up your final solution and go build a real prototype that's just good enough to be tested. Step 5: Test Now test your prototype with actual users. Don't defend your idea in case people don't like it, the point is to learn what works and what didn't, so any feedback is great. Then go back to ideation or prototyping and apply your learning. Repeat the process until you have a prototype that works and solves the real problem. Now you are ready to change the world or open shop. The Business Case model typically takes the form of an Excel spreadsheet and quantifies the financial components of the project, projecting key metrics for making any important business decision: Net Present Value (NPV), Return on Investment (ROI), Payback Period, Cost of Investment. If a project has been justified by the Business Case (both financially and non-financially) and receives the go-ahead from executives, the Business Case model is then continuously maintained and adjusted to track the project's progress against the initial financial projections and assumptions. This model then becomes a working document used during the project management process. This toolkit will detail the process of creating a robust Business Case. It also includes a working sample Business Case model (in Microsoft Excel).

Your future is nothing but the outcome of the decisions you make today. You make better decisions today, your future will be more prosperous, you make the wrong ones, then your future will be full of struggles. So, today we are going to talk about critical thinking and how it applies to problem-solving. I’ll give you a weird analogy here. Critical thinking ability is like having infrared goggles and looking at the sky at night. Without it, You look at the space, you see only three things, you see darkness, stars, and sometimes planets. But the moment You put on your infrared goggles then you get to see all these beautiful things that were invisible before. You see giant gas clouds in the galaxy, you see dust, you see all these things that were previously impossible to see. That’s what critical thinking is. It lets you identify the actual problems, the root causes, but also it helps you see the opportunities. Now, critical thinking isn’t only applicable to your work. It’s applicable to every single area of your life. But my channel is all about your career. So, that’s what’ll cover in this video. Now, we need a framework. And the framework starts with Problem Statement. The problem statement is very similar to a project charter. It includes; Goals, as in what are you trying to achieve, your success criteria, as in how will I know I succeeded or failed, your assumptions, timelines, and stakeholders involved. It’s very similar to a project charter. I am actually going to call this Problem Charter. This document is very helpful for two reasons. The second reason being a lot more important than the first. The first reason why it’s very helpful is that when you get engaged in that problem solving mode, you start uncovering a lot of other symptoms, that may be caused by completely other root causes. We are not interested in that at that moment. You will document those, but you are not going to develop solution alternatives and develop action plans for those. Unless there are dependencies. So, it helps you understand your scope, who to deal with, the timelines, it basically keeps everything under control. But to be honest, in my decade long consulting career, I noticed that the biggest help of having such a charter is all about moving through the bureaucracy. Let me explain. When you are going through problem-solving stages, you actually do a lot of work, you summon meetings, you request data from various departments, you request for expertise from consultants, so you are shaking things, you are moving things around. Now, what gives you the power to do it? What gives you the power to call all these people to a meeting room, what gives you the power to ask for certain analytics data from a completely different department? Why should they attend that meeting or give you the data you want? Because they like you and they want to help you? What if they don’t like you. Now if you are a senior employee, you are a manager, director, VP, then fine, of course, everyone will come into the meeting or give you the data you want. But if you are not that senior. Where does your power come from? It comes from that document. The problem charter. Corporate companies aren’t usually very agile. They move slowly and the employees are usually very – they are not lazy but they push back –They don’t want to stop what they are doing and join your little problem-solving brainstorm session and go through your little power point of fishbone analysis. They got their own thing to worry about. So, if you have your problem charter, only a few pages, signed off by a sponsor, someone senior, then you have the power to get the data you want and bring in experts and call for meetings. Ok, now let’s continue; I mean you developed the problem statement, you got your buy-in from someone senior, now, you are off to solve the problem. The 2nd step in your critical thinking towards a problem is identifying the root causes, right? 5 Whys is made famous by Toyota Production System. As the name suggests, you ask WHY WHY WHY until you get to a root cause. Very simple stuff. More information at our Website: www.cicstart.org Principles and Processes Related to Sustainable Building Design Carolyn Moultrie Dr David Grierson The presentation aims to provide an insight into the many facets of the sustainable design process and comprises a series of one-to-one interviews with practitioners from Hypostyle Architects, PagePark Architects, Assist Architects, Gaia Architects, Archial, Arup and Haa Design (in order of appearance) All will describe their practice sustainable design philosophy/ethos and underlying principles. The practice case study buildings are used to show how sustainability is embedded into design methodology and mapped onto, or has transformed, the design process. The projects are from a variety of sectors including social housing, private developer housing, commercial office and education and both new build and retrofit. One of the case study buildings -- the retrofit and extension of Arup's office Scotstoun House, in Dalmeny South Queensferry, is shown in more depth with interviews from the designers Haa Design and Arup. In operation once more for Arup, since July 2010, end users give their view on the new working environment. The practices reveal common approaches and divergences in their principles and processes for sustainable building design. The presentation follows on from ongoing research and in particular a study undertaken as dissertation work within the Masters of Research programme in Building Design and Management at the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde during 2010. The objectives of the study were to investigate the design principles and processes for sustainability and to explore them in action within current practice. This was achieved by engaging with the architectural and multi-disciplinary practices of the presentation. A context was established by reviewing literature focusing on the global environmental perspective, UK and Scottish legislation, sustainable principles, blueprints, sustainable processes and evaluation. The outcomes were a process model developed to provide a framework for discussion and case study review and the beginnings of a methodology for refining practice ethos and developing a set of guiding principles. The study supports the proposal that a new framework can help inform a move towards a typology of sustainable building design that in turn can help practitioners develop and refine their approaches to sustainability. Ideas for future research are suggested.

Presenter: Mr. Jonathan Koh, Director, Trade Facilitation Centre of Excellence, CrimsonLogic Summary: This video provides practical insights into the experience of Singapore in developing paperless customs procedures for its National Single Window and risk management system, called TradeNet. The implementer is CrimsonLogic, which is a government-owned company that provides trade facilitation (TF) consultancy solutions such as strategic TF roadmaps to governments, including for port community systems, single window systems, customs management systems and free trade zone systems. Their system is primarily based on the UN’s Single Window Implementation Framework (SWIF), and is conceptually executed through data visualization, data harmonization, and risk management. The single window system transformed Singapore’s permit processing time from 2-7 days to within 10 minutes, the number of documents from 4-35 pages to 1 eForm, and its processing fees from US$6-13 to US$2.10. For a successful TF project the following best practices are recommended: understanding the trade process, realizing that TF should be a business process project and not just an information technology (IT) project, pushing for government to champion the project, and requiring stakeholders to accept new ways of thinking and doing things.

In many cases when you develop a software project, you know how it starts but you cannot predict what will happen after a few weeks of development. As a result, it becomes difficult to keep track of the project progress. If you've ever felt that things get out of control, you know what I mean. Delays cause the project to cost more, because you need to pay for additional development time. They also cause your clients to get upset and this is something we want to prevent. Scrum enables you to keep everything visible. It allows the team to know exactly what's going on and make adjustments to the project to keep it moving forward. With Scrum you build pieces of the software. The client can experience each part and determine what to do next. This way you have control over the progress of the project and the power to prevent delays. Let's get started: Step # 1 -- Create a Backlog The project backlog is a list of all the features that clients would like to have as part of the complete product. It includes the client's dreams and wishes. But it doesn't mean that everything will be developed, as we'll see later. The Backlog is created by the Product Owner. The Product Owner represents the interest of the people who ordered the product -- the clients. Step #2 -- Estimate and Prioritize After completing the Backlog list the Product Owner estimates how long it would take to develop each item on the list. There are different ways to estimate and I'll explain them in another clip. Next comes prioritization. The goal is to focus on what brings value to the business. The Product Owner sorts the backlog items by priority, from the most important at the top to the least important at the bottom, picks the features that should be included in the release and creates the Release Backlog. Step # 3 -- Sprint Here is when most of the work is being done. Sprints are development units between 3 to 30 days. A project usually includes several sprints. At the beginning of each sprint the team will have a Sprint Planning meeting. In this meeting the Product Owner and the team get together to decide what will be done in the new sprint. They select items of the highest priority from the Release Backlog. The Product Owner describes to the team what is desired and the team decides how much of what is desired they can complete in this sprint. The Sprint Planning meeting has two parts: The first part is spent with the Product Owner to decide which features to develop. In the second part of the meeting the team plans out the sprint. The selected tasks are placed in the sprint backlog and assigned to the team members. Everyday the team meets for a short 15 minute meeting called "Daily Scrum". In this meeting each team member answers three questions: • What have you done on this project since the last daily scrum meeting? • What do you plan on doing on this project between now and the next scrum meeting? • What stands in your way to meet your commitments to this sprint and this project? The purpose of Daily Scrum is to synchronize the work of all team members and address any issues that might delay the work progress. In every sprint the team must complete the work that was defined for this sprint. Bugs that are related to the features on the Sprint Backlog should also be fixed as part of the sprint. At the end of each sprint, a Sprint Review meeting is held. In this meeting the team presents what was developed during the sprint to the Product owner and other Stakeholders. This meeting helps to decide what the team should do next. The clients can see the project progress and submit feedback. It prevents the risk of developing features that the client didn't ask for. Also, in case of a delay in the development process, the sprint will not be completed on time and that will indicate to everyone that there is a problem and something needs to be done. Repeat step 3 until all features on the Release Backlog are developed and the product is ready to be released. That's it. So easy. As you can see, Scrum is a simple and effective way to have control over your development process and make sure things go according to plan. I created a flowchart for you of the three steps.
