This was prior to my arrest and I filmed (apologies again for amateur, wobbly quality) the reaction of a couple of decent councillors to the complete dismissal of any sort of debate - the eldery folk and there supporters in the public gallery were equally shocked by the proceedings. This was why I was filming - people need to see what is going on

What is Chartism? | Definition of Chartism

30:06
What is Chartism? | Definition of Chartism: Chartism was a working-class movement for political reform in Britain that existed from 1838 to 1857. It took its name from the People's Charter of 1838 and was a national protest movement, with particular strongholds of support in Northern England, the East Midlands, the Staffordshire Potteries, the Black Country, and the South Wales Valleys. Support for the movement was at its highest in 1839, 1842, and 1848, when petitions signed by millions of working people were presented to the House of Commons. The strategy employed was to use the scale of support which these petitions and the accompanying mass meetings demonstrated to put pressure on politicians to concede manhood suffrage. Chartism thus relied on constitutional methods to secure its aims, though there were some who became involved in insurrectionary activities, notably in south Wales and in Yorkshire. The People's Charter called for six reforms to make the political system more democratic: 1. A vote for every man twenty-one years of age, of sound mind, and not undergoing punishment for a crime. 2. The secret ballot to protect the elector in the exercise of his vote. 3. No property qualification for Members of Parliament in order to allow the constituencies to return the man of their choice. 4. Payment of Members, enabling tradesmen, working men, or other persons of modest means to leave or interrupt their livelihood to attend to the interests of the nation. 5. Equal constituencies, securing the same amount of representation for the same number of electors, instead of allowing less populous constituencies to have as much or more weight than larger ones. 6. Annual Parliamentary elections, thus presenting the most effectual check to bribery and intimidation, since no purse could buy a constituency under a system of universal manhood suffrage in each twelve-month period. Chartists saw themselves fighting against political corruption and for democracy in an industrial society, but attracted support beyond the radical political groups for economic reasons, such as opposing wage cuts and unemployment. ………………………………………………………………………………….. Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats launching New Green Economy Consultation

01:27
Welsh Liberal Democrats have today launched a radical consultation document on how Wales can develop a new, green economy ahead of the partys Autumn Conference in October. The document will be sent to members and stakeholders in the next few days in order to make sure that people from across Wales have the opportunity to contribute to developing the radical ideas needed to ensure that Wales has an economy fit for the future. The paper outlines areas where political will could help develop an economy that is both financially and environmentally sustainable. These areas are: · Infrastructure, Renewable Energy and Public Transport · Green Jobs · Housing and Building Regulations · Local Economic Development · Governance Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said: Far too much of the political debate is looking at how we can return to the economic climate of the last few years. But I do not believe that that is what we should be aiming for. The Welsh economy was struggling even before this recession, especially due to high amounts of personal debt and a lack of private sector investment. We also cannot ignore the fact that climate change has the potential to change Wales for the worse. Wales has the potential to establish itself as a world leader in developing cutting edge green technologies. We should make the most of this opportunity now, before it is too late. We also have the chance soon to make sure that all new buildings in Wales are environmentally friendly. These plans are the beginning of the process that will establish the Welsh Liberal Democrats as the leading thinkers in the debate about how we want our economy to look after the recession, and what we can do to tackle radical climate change. I am glad that my party has the vision to discuss these important ideas, which are vital for the future of our country.

Devolution in the United Kingdom

31:24
In the United Kingdom, devolution refers to the statutory granting of powers from the Parliament of the United Kingdom to the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, the Northern Ireland Assembly and the London Assembly and to their associated executive bodies the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government, the Northern Ireland Executive and the Greater London Authority. Devolution differs from federalism in that the devolved powers of the subnational authority ultimately reside in central government, thus the state remains, de jure, a unitary state. Legislation creating devolved parliaments or assemblies can be repealed or amended by central government in the same way as any statute. This video is targeted to blind users.
