4 Reasons Your Chest Won’t Grow (FIX THIS!)

In this video, I’m going to show you how to fix a chest that doesn’t seem to respond to your training and won’t grow no matter what you do to it. You might think that I’m going to show you some secret chest exercise that is going to do the trick. Not quite. While there will be a few new things you’ll see here the key is more in how you perform the exercises in your chest workout rather than what you are doing. It starts with the start of the exercise of course. There are two things you want to do before you even perform your first rep to ensure that the chest muscles and not the shoulders are doing the brunt of the work during the lift. Because of the proximity of these muscles to each other it is very normal for the shoulders to dominate the movement. You can stop this by first sticking your chest out and making sure it is more prominent than your shoulders. The second is that you can unshrug your shoulders by depressing your shoulder blades. Both of these things will help the chest to be in a better position to initiate the move and ultimately produce a stronger contraction. Next it is important to concentrate on how you finish each of your chest exercises if you want to get more out of them. What I’m talking about here is literally changing the way you think of a rep. Remove the word press or push from the name of the exercise and replace it with the word squeeze. This will have the effect of changing your mindset about how the movement is performed. For instance, don’t think of it as a bench press but rather a bench squeeze. Really work to squeeze and contract the chest as you move the bar up to the ceiling. Same thing can be said for a pushup as well. Don’t just push your body away from the floor, squeeze your body off of the floor. The slight difference can make a huge difference in the activation of the chest over the course of many reps and many workouts. It continues from here however since you don’t want to just squeeze the reps but you ultimately want to figure out a way to take the chest through its full contraction. The only way this can occur is if you find a way to adduct your arms across your chest in the exercise. Now, a lot of people will point to these horizontal adduction exercises for chest and say that they are isolation exercises or muscle sculptors. They claim they are not as effective for building a bigger chest. I disagree. Any chest exercise that you can load up and deliver peak tension to the muscles of the chest and take them through their full range of motion and functions is an exercise that is capable of building more muscle. Keep including these and perhaps a few of the ones that are new to you from this video and I promise you will see better chest gains because of it. Finally, you must not forget to drop set when doing your chest workouts. Perhaps here more than anywhere else it is important to do this. If you followed my directions from earlier and made the chest do the majority of the work you will see that you, at that point, could rely on the assistance of the shoulders and triceps to get you through failure and into even more of a growth producing zone. Bench presses to failure into pushups to failure are still one of the easiest and most effective ways to grow your chest. Never Do Ab Wheel Rollouts Like This!

Given their ease of setup, they are actually a great exercise for home workouts too since you can do them on the floor with very little space and one inexpensive ab wheel. The problem is, the ab rollout is also one of the most abused and misperformed exercises which can quickly ruin your lower back if you don’t fix how you’re doing them. In this video, I’m going to show you how to perform an ab wheel rollout safely so you can train your abs without wrecking your back. The problem with the ab wheel rollout starts with the position of your lower back during the setup of the exercise. The two things you want to avoid is letting your hips drop down into a straight line with your back and getting the hands out too far from the body. Either one of these will shift too much of the focus onto the lats and turn the into the prime mover of the exercise. This is not bad if you are looking for a great bodyweight back exercise but this is certainly not our goal when performing the ab wheel rollout. The back should be pulled out of the natural anterior pelvic tilt that occurs during the setup for this exercise. While you will be flexing the spine from above, a key function of the abdominal muscles, you will likely only be flattening the lumbar spine and pulling into a more of a posterior tilt from the excessive anterior tilt. This will have an effect of actually putting the back into a safer position to perform the exercise. From here, you want to consciously make sure that you hold the abs in a contracted position as you initiate the rollout. Only go out as far as your ab strength can support you. If you are a beginner, you may only be able to go out a foot or two. That is ok, as long as your lower back is not caving in at any point because your have surpassed the strength of your abs then you can still get great benefits from the exercise. If you are stronger, you can go out further and even hold the end position for awhile to increase the challenge. The next part is where most of us will ruin the exercise, even if it has been performed properly up to this point. Instead of initiating the return of the ab wheel to the top using the hips you have to contract the abs first and be sure to move your entire torso in one piece. Your hips and the wheel should come up together, without allowing the hips to travel backwards. In fact, you can check that you are doing this right by placing a bench behind your hips and making sure not to make contact with it with your butt as you pull back to the top. The most important element of this move is that you are getting both benefits of the abs if you want to get the most from it. The anti-extension and spinal flexion components of the abs are both going to be tested if you perform this right. Both are needed in order to build the ab strength necessary not only to get great results from the ab wheel rollout but to keep it a safe exercise choice as well. How to Fix a Sunken Chest! (PECTUS EXCAVATUM)

The condition known as pectus excavatum is a bony deformity that tends to get worse with adolescence. It is characterized by a sunken in sternum that makes pec development very challenging and can make those that have it self conscious. The degree to which you can do something about fixing your sunken chest without surgery is dependent on the severity of the condition you have. If your chest looks like the one shown in this video as an example of a severe case or if your pectus is making it hard for you to breathe when exerted you will unfortunately have to resort to one of the two surgical means shown. The first is the Nuss procedure where they surgically reshape your sternum with the help of a brace that is worn for a long period of time to help reshape and rebuild the structure. This can be very invasive and can cause a good deal of discomfort early on post op. The second option is a newer one in which they implant a strong but small magnet in your lower chest and then have you wear an external magnetic brace that helps to pull the bony deformity into a better position over time. That said, many cases of pectus excavatum are not as severe and intervention with weight training and stretching can be of great help to minimizing the appearnace of the defect while not completely fixing it. Here I show you that the condition must first be addressed for the posture aggravations that generally accompany it. For example, rounded shoulders and a sunken chest are often times seen together since the pecs tend to get shortened. A good stretch for the pec major and pec minor will help to expand the chest and ribcage while allowing the muscles on the back to get stronger and hold your posture in place better. It is the latter that allows you to build stronger rhomboids while expanding the chest with an exercise called the band pull apart. This exercise is better to be done as twenty sets of one rather than one set of twenty, to illustrate the it is the quality of the movement and not the quantity that establishes the potential for improvement from your intervention. The other exercises shown here for a sunken chest or pectus excavatum are all meant to improve the development of your chest. That said, it is again the way in which you perform them and the frequency of which you perform them that will make all the difference in their ability to bring about change. The exercises shown here, while all capable of adding mass to your chest when performed in lower reps and in a higher intensity workout, are not prescribed that way here. You should instead perform these in higher reps, fewer sets and much more frequently (4-5 times per week) to accumulate the volume of lower intensity that is going to be needed to bring about change over time. Do not expect a quick fix here. You must accumulate many hours of effort here, however if you do, you will notice a change in the appearance of the sunken chest and pectus excavatum. The Official Bench Press Check List (AVOID MISTAKES!)
Train like an athlete step by step - http://athleanx.com/x/athlete Subscribe to this channel here - http://bit.ly/2b0coMW The bench press is one of the most classic powerlifting lifts you can add to your chest workout. That said, it is one of the most complex simply because there are so many places in the lift that you can go wrong. In this video, I created a check list to give your helpful reference for each of the most important places in the lift that you will want to get right so you can increase your gains and keep your joints safe in the process. As a physical therapist, one of my biggest concerns will always be the long term safety of a movement as well as the risk to reward ratio of performing the lift. In the case of the bench press, this is one of the most fundamental power moves that all athletes and novice lifters should master. There are plenty of things that can go wrong however, and the joints like the shoulders, wrists, elbows and even your back can become vulnerable if you don’t get it right. The first thing you need to note is where you are going to be doing the bench press in the first place. Ideally, you’ll have access to a power rack that you can set up a bench in and have the appropriate pins in place to catch the bar should you fail. If doing it here, you will also want to put the clips on the ends of the bar for added safety. If you are training at home however, the clips might be best left off the bar just in case you get stuck under the bar and need a way to dump the weights to get out from under it. Next the alignment of the bar in the rack and the bench on the bar is crucial to setting up a good lift. Simple enough, but make sure that everything is centered before laying back on the bench. Next look up at the bar and ensure that your eyes are at the same height as the bar itself. This will set you up for a good liftoff from the rack. Along the same lines, you want to be sure that your bar holders are not too high or too low. If you arms are fully extended as you reach up for the bar then you are set too high and will have no leverage when it comes to lifting the bar out of its resting position. Next focus on the position of your feet and your chest before initiating the liftoff. Your feet need to be under your knees in order to be able to contract the glutes during the movement and add to your pushing power on the bench press. If they are too far out in front of you, much of your pushing power will be lost before you even begin. Likewise your chest must be arched. This establishes a stable base of your shoulder blades pushing down and into the bench, which will act as a counterforce for the bar as you press it in the opposite direction. Lift the bar and tighten the abs as you lower it down to the chest. The bar path is crtiical. Make sure it is traveling down and forward and not just straight down. This will be more easily accomplished by keeping your elbows tucked closer to your sides, about 75 degrees away. At the end of your set, fully straighten the elbows and then slowly allow the bar to travel backwards towards the catches. From here, lower the bar once it has engaged the rack and you’re done. A perfectly executed bench press set. Let the chest gains begin, and let the healthy shoulders and joints continue! Meal prep on a budget! All meals are really cheap and healthy. They are really delicious too. Definitely possible to stay healthy and also eat yummy food while you're on a budget. Don't forget to subscribe and thumbs up the video! ☆ Breakfast ☆ Peanut Butter and Jelly Oats Bar ☆ 1.5 cup of rolled oats 200-250g of Peanut Butter (Depends on how much peanut butter you like) 1 cup of Almond Milk 3-5 Tablespoons of Maple Syrup. 3 Tablespoons may not be sweet enough for some! :D 1 teaspoon of Cinnamon Powder 1/8 Teaspoon of salt if your peanut butter doesn't have any added salt 140g of Strawberry/Grape/Blueberry Jam 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon of Baking Powder (I've also excluded coconut oil in this recipe. You can add a tablespoon if you wish to) Mix all the wet ingredients together then add the dry ingredients. Mix it well and pour it in a tin. Then add some jam! You can add as much jam as you like, or as little as you like. ☆ Lunch ☆ Tuna Salad - $2 per serving ☆ 1 can of chickpeas 2-3 Capsicums (Bell Peppers) 2 Carrots Tomatoes Sundried Tomatoes 1 can of Tuna (450g) Salt Pepper Paprika Olive oil Mix tuna with two tablespoons of olive oil, some salt, pepper and paprika. I added quite a lot of paprika cause I like it. Adjust to you liking! Sundried tomatoes is the key for this meal (IMO). The salad is super tasty with it but sundried tomatoes are not the cheapest option. I would be using some sort of dressings I didn't add that so it's fine! :) ☆ Dinner ☆ Chicken and Rice - Less than $2 per serving ☆ Cook a cup of brown rice with 2 cups of water for around 30 minutes For the chicken part: 800g of Chicken Thigh 1/2 An onion 2 cloves of garlic Paprika Cayenne Pepper Oregano Salt Pepper Cook the onions and garlics first. Add some paprika and cayenne pepper. Then add the chicken! Now add more paprika if you wish to, oregano, salt and pepper. I just eyeball it. It doesn't have to be super precise. Once the chicken is nice and brown, add a can of tomatoes. Then let it cook for around 30 minutes for the liquid to evaporate. Cook some broccoli in the mean time! You can boil or stir fry it. How to Get that “SHREDDED” Look (FAST!)

While your level of body fat and ultimately your leanness will be impacted greatly by your diet and the foods that you eat, you can influence the way your muscles look just by adjusting some of the techniques you use in your workouts. In this video, I’m going to show you how to get that shredded look fast by incorporating overcoming isometrics into your workouts. The four that I show you are great for either dedicated back day or chest day (or more functionally on upper body push or pull day). Before starting them however, you want to know the difference between an overcoming and a yielding isometric. Most people that use isometrics for training are familiar with the yielding type. This is where you have a heavier weight in your hands that you are attempting to resist it’s fall or the force of gravity acting upon it. Think of holding a heavy barbell in a mid position of a curl and not letting it drop down towards your thighs. This would be tough to do and it would result in an intense contraction of your biceps. On the other hand, you could position your hands at ninety degrees in relation to your sides (as in the same mid position of a curl) and instead push up on a fixed or nonmoving bar. As you push as hard as you can you increasingly recruit more motor units to participate in the activity and ultimately increase the strength of the contraction. This is an overcoming isometric and this is where you can do the most beneficial things for your strength in that given range of motion as well as maintain the safety of your joints in the process. Here I show you how to apply this technique in the contracted or more shortened position of your upper body pushing muscles and then in the more elongated state. The same is then done for the muscles of the posterior chain as well. The key to the effectiveness of using overcoming iso’s for getting ripped and more muscular looking is to aim to increase muscle tone by gradually increasing the resting state of the muscle and getting it used to producing more overall tension. Aim to hold each rep for 6 seconds for maximum benefits. You should look to build the strength of the contraction from the first second to the last. Throw in a few of these to each session and in no time you will see a quick difference in the appearance of the muscles and their hardness without doing anything else different in your workouts. Keep in mind, the most effective combination is to make sure that you are dialing in your nutrition at the same time to drop your levels of body fat and reveal more of that muscle definition that you are developing.
