Amidst the bluster of his critique of the discipline, Vine Deloria Jr. systematically developed a philosophical analysis that married reverse anthropology with ontography with critical ecology, well before these approaches had entered mainstream anthropological conversations. His texts—notably "God is Red" and "Metaphysics of Modern Existence"—frequently operated on two levels. First, Deloria sought to outline the ontological commitments to place within Native American traditions. In doing so, he leveled the analytical field: Chief Luther Standing Bear was accorded a symmetrical intellectual position to Alfred North Whitehead, for instance, and European communities were evaluated for the degree to which they had evolved toward Native America (rather than the other way around). Second, Deloria sought to outline the parallel commitments to history within European and Euro-American traditions in a way that made this preoccupation seem foreign and strange. Standing in the position of a native looking back, he targeted the alterity of those who claim to have transcended their indigeneity—who claimed a temporal position rather than a spatial position—as part of an overtly critical project designed to provincialize “the West.” This session has been convened to engage Deloria both as a formative voice in the struggle for what Viveiros de Castro refers to as ontological self-determination, and as a critic of the metaphysical moorings of a Western tradition that includes the anthropological project. Insofar as Deloria's intervention hinges on the relative priorities of history and place, the panel situates this engagement within existing archaeological debates (archaeology being deeply implicated in the perpetuation of a Western chronological imaginary that transforms sites into eras and places into histories). But the goal is to reposition Deloria's philosophy within anthropology more broadly. As the most influential Native American intellectual of the twentieth century, who lived much of his life in the Denver area, Deloria's work continues to dislodge and defamiliarize anthropological thought in transformational ways.

Please watch: "Why Live a Godly Life If I'm Already Forgiven and Going to Heaven Anyway?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2AxgckGcj8 --~-- THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT TONGUES What does the Bible teach about this gift of speaking in tongues? That’s what we are going to talk about today on the BEAT. Hey what’s up everyone my name is Allen Parr and so today we are tackling the touchy subject of speaking in tongues. What is the gift of tongues? What are some misconceptions of tongues? How should it be used in the church? What is the Gift of Tongues? 1) The gift of tongues originally was the supernatural ability to share the gospel in another known dialect without the speaker having previous knowledge of this language (like me speaking Japanese) – Acts 2:1-12 2) Some also believe it is the ability to speak and/or pray in an unknown language. So What are some of the Misconceptions? 1) Everyone can learn to speak in tongues – The Bible teaches that tongues is a spiritual gift. It also teaches that the Holy Spirit is the one who distributes spiritual gifts to believers AS HE WILLS. So just like any other gift you cannot choose your gifts they are given to you. So I don’t how a Christian can learn to speak in tongues any more than they can learn to possess the gift of pastoring of healing or miracles. 2) The second misconception is…People who speak in tongues have more spiritual power than those that don’t – I don’t see anywhere in Scripture where a person who spoke/prayed in tongues was able to accomplish more spiritually than those that didn’t. a. This type of mentality merely divides the church more than it already is into the haves and the have-nots and makes those that don’t have the gift feel inferior. How should this Gift be used in the Church? 1) There must be an interpreter – So if you’re in church and everyone is speaking in tongues Paul says, what if someone who isn’t familiar with the gift or an unbeliever comes in? (Put yourself in their shoes) They will think they’ve just entered into a crazy place. (14:23) So the question is, “Why would you want to take a chance of offending, confusing or turning off an unbeliever from church simply because you feel the need to speak/pray in tongues in church?” Which is why Paul said, “I CAN speak in tongues but IN CHURCH I would rather speak in a language that EVERYONE can understand.” So even Paul said he doesn’t speak in tongues in church unless there is a KNOWN interpreter present. 2) Experience should never contradict Scripture – Sometimes people will say, “well I just felt the Spirit.” Saints, the same Spirit who empowers us to use our gifts is the same Spirit who inspired the writing of the Bible and He cannot contradict Himself by leading you to have an experience in church that goes against the writing of Scripture. Finally, because a Christian’s view on this subject has nothing to do with salvation. It is my prayer that your views and experiences with this will be based on scripture Always remember to be sensitive to unbelievers when in a church… Finally, be careful not to adopt the mentality that people who have the gift are more spiritual or more powerful than those that don’t. I would love to know your experience with this as it relates to the church so please leave your comments below I’d love to hear them. We should be focused more on exemplifying the fruit of the Spirit than we are with the gifts of the Spirit. The study of baseball and the study of American history are not dissimilar. Both rely on origin myths and a profound sense of American exceptionalism. Both also require constant recycling of nostalgia and realism and a need for the scholar to read between the lines. Historian and Quantrell Award winner Matthew M. Briones, whose current research examines the historical interplay of race, class, and sports in Chicago, will reflect on why and how he teaches these two deeply held passions in tandem. Matthew M. Briones is a cultural historian who specializes in the history of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States, interracialism, and immigration. His first monograph, Jim and Jap Crow: A Cultural History of 1940s Interracial America (Princeton University Press, 2012), focuses on the home front culture of World War II, interrogating the ways in which different racialized and ethnic groups interacted during a time of heightened sense of possibility for American democracy. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/UCHICAGOytSubscribe About #UChicago: A destination for inquiry, research, and education, the University of Chicago empowers scholars to challenge conventional thinking. 2016 has been characterized by some significant events, the long-term impacts of which are still uncertain. But what we do know is that there remains a critical challenge for us in improving the lives of those living in poverty: from life-saving responses in humanitarian emergencies; to supporting individuals and communities to find work and build livelihoods; to challenging the systems and structures that keep people poor and drive inequality. Over the last year Oxfam, working closely with local, national and global partners, has been at the forefront of enabling positive change – thanks to the commitment and generosity of supporters like you. Bringing hope to some of the bleakest situations, empowering women and men to create their own futures, and holding governments to account for the decisions that affect the most vulnerable. Thank you for your support this year. Thank you for playing a part in improving the lives of millions of women, men and children around the world. And thank you for continuing to believe in a world without poverty. https://www.oxfam.org/donate

TOWARDS A REFLEXIVE CRITIQUE OF THE MEDIATION PROCESSES The Committee for World Anthropologies, with the sponsorship of the WCAA, proposes a Roundtable that addresses the challenges of involving anthropologists from other anthropological traditions in events organized by associations (e.g. the AAA) that could be viewed as hegemonic power centers. What are the implications for the anthropologists that take on the role of transnational mediators and for the anthropologies that are somewhat exoticized in the process? Indeed, being defined as producers of "peripheral" or "subaltern" or even "indigenous" theory sets them immediately in contrast to just "theory" and external or tangential to the master matrix of anthropological knowledge. We believe that this topic directly addresses the conference theme "Familiar/Strange" by underscoring the power geometries involved in the production of a more connected international anthropological field. The roundtable "Between World Anthropologies and World Anthropology: towards a reflexive critique of the mediation processes" will address the progress of internationalization trends at the AAA as well as their significance and meaning in terms of equitable and innovative processes of knowledge production in anthropology. Within and beyond the AAA spaces have been created that support dialogue between anthropologists across the globe, but there is little feedback of how anthropologists elsewhere view this process. We will debate these dynamics by asking our roundtable participants to address two sets of articulated questions: (1) What are the aims of AAA in the internationalization process? What brokerage positions are developed by anthropologists outside the USA who engage with the AAA, or by USA anthropologists who become salient participants in international bodies such as WCAA or IUAES? How are actors who are engaged in these processes positioned by their own local academic communities (e.g. as Facilitators, Opportunists, Heroes)? (2) What new forms of distribution of power and knowledge are produced through this internationalization process? Should they be challenged, monitored, transformed or supported? How does this affect non-hegemonic anthropological traditions? Is a new kind of epistemological space emerging, one that embraces theory produced from very different political positionalities? In sum, what are the world wide effects of this process for anthropological knowledge production?

Outbreaks of avian influenza have led to the death or culling of millions of poultry and pigs and untold millions of dollars in losses to farmers and producers. Avian influenza is also a deadly disease that affects humans. Through the use of isotopic techniques to track migrating birds, and molecular techniques to detect the presence of viruses, researchers and veterinary services will have a head start in predicting sites at higher risk of outbreaks. The Role of State Public Health Agencies in Improving Assisted Reproductive Technology (Recorded June 28, 2016) Nearly half of infants born via assisted reproductive technology (ART) (45.6%) were born in multiple-birth deliveries, compared to just 3.4 percent of all infants. Multiple-gestation pregnancies increase risk for poor birth outcomes including babies who are premature birth and low birth weight. The webinar covers: monitoring and studying maternal and infant health outcomes related to ART, understanding the public health department’s role in leading improvements in ART practices, how state agencies are improving consumer and provider awareness of ART’s impact on twin births, and the importance of partnerships in reducing preterm birth through ART.

4/15/16 In the five hundred years since the publication of Thomas More’s Of A Republic’s Best State and of the New Island of Utopia (1516), the project of imagining an ideal society has emerged as simultaneously regenerative and devastating on multiple fronts: for the concept of the polity, for the composition of social fabrics, and, most relevant from the vantage of the design disciplines, for the formation of buildings, cities, and territories. This year’s Cambridge Talks, now in its tenth edition, aims to provide a spectrum of exemplary instances of utopia’s modern guise. In the main conference panels, we bring together speakers to address the rivalry between those utopian endeavors that organize space mainly through social relations and production, and those whose expansive impulse searches out some form of technical mastery over spatial configuration. In other words, utopia can be understood as either embodied or totalizing, bound or unbound. By taking examples from the 19th and 20th centuries, the case studies presented here—from communes and plantations to infrastructural projects and global ecologies—exhibit various attempts to imagine social conditions alongside spatial ones. A concluding discussion will touch upon the philosophical and theoretical ramifications of utopia today. April 14, 3 PM – 6 PM PhD Colloquium Respondents: Ana Miljački, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sonja Dümpelmann, Harvard University April 15, 9 AM – 5 PM Panel 1: Embodied Utopia Luis Casteñeda, Syracuse University Joyce Chaplin, Harvard University Erika Naginski, Harvard University Respondent: Catherine Ingraham, Pratt Institute Panel 2: Total Utopia Daniel Barber, University of Pennsylvania Sara Pritchard, Cornell Univesity Abby Spinak, Charles Warren Center, Harvard University Respondent: John May, Harvard University Keynote Lecture Damian White, Rhode Island School of Design Discussants: K. With young children gaining access to a dizzying array of games, videos, and other digital media, will they ever learn to read? The answer is yes—if they are surrounded by adults who know how to help and if they are introduced to media designed to promote literacy, instead of undermining it. In short, these children and their families could greatly benefit from a media mentor. What exactly is a media mentor? Michael Levine and Lisa Guernsey, authors of Tap, Click, Read: Growing Readers in a World of Screens, and Chip Donohue, editor of Family Engagement in the Digital Age: Early Childhood Educators as Media Mentors, discuss this new term in the lexicon of 21st-century early childhood education. What skills do media mentors need? How can they be supported? And how can more children gain access to them? In this presentation, Michael, Lisa, and Chip explore the importance of these new roles.
